Hell yeah! Linux is just that important.
I just got a PM from Shn and I was about to PM Pol to ask him for a polled vote. Too late, huh? :D

I don't use Linux too often, and there's a lot I don't know about it, but I think it would be great to have a seperate section for it.

Haha it was ME!

I jsut dont see the point in having an ugly O/S, when you can have a nice VERY stable Windows XP pro. Windows has NEVER crashed on me. I love windows...but I guess the idea wouldnt be bad...I just wouldnt be there haha.

I think a certain someone is lost on his journey
It's not attatched to it's gui so it's completely customizeable. You'd know if you tried it.

BTW, all the pretty new eye candy in XP came from Linux/Unix desktop environments (Gnome, KDE), and Macs. Did you see the Longhorn pics so far? There's nothing original in it!

Oh, no one said XP wasn't unstable. At the moment, XP is my OS of choice, pretty stable, but Linux is simply more stable. There's no conflict on this issue if your read a little on it. <_<

Who needs support when you have your fellow board members?

We'll be glad to help if you have any problems running linux. There are people on this board that know enough about linux to get you started. All you have to do is ask :)

I find it cool that some people dont even run linux but can still help out and answer general questions. There is nothing wrong with running Windows...........I run Windows myself sometimes, but I prefer linux because it can do more. And what's an o.s. if you can't push it to it's full potential.

Besides, just think how cool you'll look when all your friends find out you run Linux :smilie4:

Anyone can check out Linux for free and without altering their system.
Check out a thread I started on "Live Disks." Don't install if you just wanna try.
Live Disk Thread (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=98483)

Hey, Shn, maybe if a LinuxWorld Section is created, this will be pinned. :P

As for software, there's an incredible amount of sotware for it, but it's not as easy to find as Windows stuff. I think Linux still has a way to go before becoming a normal desktop OS, but it can do damn near anything! You can run who knows how many apps for a looooong time without it ever affecing the system because everything is seperate. With windows, everything is integrated, so if one things lags, it can affect the entire system, but it does have it's advantages if one thinks about it.

OH, and for gaming, Windows is still the way to go. The thing is, Linux and Unix have been doing things for a long time that Microsoft is trying to do now. Like 64-bit proccesing. Been around for a lot longer than some people know. Linux has been there, done that. Windows has recently come out with a Windows XP 64-bit edition beta.

If you're used to Windows, then Linux may seen to involve more command line then you're used to (especially installer software [not always]), but many of the newer distros, you don't need that much, especially the live disks. Unix involves a LOT more command line. :D

I run a server with Linux, but without a pretty gui, so that one is ugly.

Because Linux people can discuss what they want to. Will it cause any harm to you? In fact, it should make it better for you, because all the Linux threads will have their very own garbage can and won't pollute Softwareworld for you.

there is not really any place to discuss file sharing in linux on the board. im sure alot more people will be trying linux as it becomes more popular.

Linux world would be a great idea.

Marius24
02-09-2004, 09:49 PM
then there will be a windows world and a mac world. Its still all software and its proberly only thing keeping the software world going. As soon as you start splitting the world into smaller ones people dont go in them because of the smaller comunities see the filesharing worlds like DC++ etc they are ghost towns

@4play:
You tried Nicotine man? I'm sharing around 140K songs on it now (Linux SoulSeek).

@marius24:
Windowsworld will never happen because Windows is the overwhelming majority. Macworld will never happen because almost nobody uses it. And about ghost towns, there are a lot of people that have expressed interest in Linuxworld. Let's just give it a whirl and if nobody uses it, kill it. :)

Besides. Mac osx and most other mac os are based on unix anyway. So they can still fit into linux category. Other than dos and novell and stuff. The softwareworld focuses on windows based software. One section apart from that would be all that linuxworld would need.

Exactly, and Mac isn't the only OS based on Unix. That's why I think it should have a comprimise on the name.

Unix, Linux, Solaris, Mac and more can fall into one category, right?
Except that I can't come up with a decent name. LinuxWorld sounds good, but that wouldn't be an accurate description.

Unix-BasedWorld sounds like shit, doesn't it?
"Welcome to the Wonderful World of ...nix."
*nixWorld? A bit difficult, isn't it?

yeah i tried using it but i still can seem to share any of my files through my router. people keep getting error loading list messages.

still the pyslsk client for linux was pretty neat for a while.

*nix world might be a cool name if it is to encompass the whole unix/linux/solaris/bsd world.

Linuxworld could be cool. I know theres a shit load of linux communities out there but as a n00b I dont like to start asking stupid questions to peeps I dont know.
Maybe a better idea would be to reorganize softwareworld into Windows and mac/linux subsections. Or a mac/linux subsection and assume anything else in software world is windose.

I have used linux (mandrake 9) but I need to get a new modem (shitty usb winmodem with no linux support  ) Everytime I run into something I did'nt know I had to reboot into XP.
