All i can say is that I love my new card 100 times more than my geforce fx5200.

im bout to buy a new mobo, but with my current shitty ms 6367, 4 x agp. it still runs pretty good. I think my mobo, memory and CPU are all holding down the cards full potential. oh well :P

my benchmarks were:

FX5200 score in blue
R9600XT scores in red

3dmark 01
4352 8035

3dmark 03
905 3026

Aquamark
Gfx 777 1149
CPU 4392 2284

Total
7149 9178

So now your probably wondering whats up with my new Aquamark score... yer im thinking the same as well. im confused. why has my CPU score gone down by sooo much? weird.

feel free to discuss any thoughts.

also whats the best drivers out there for this card. i havent OC anything yet, and i have the standard drivers installed

With regards to the Aquamark3 score:

1. You should always benchmark 3 times and take the average of the three, or the highest.

2. You need to go into control panel and set AA and AF to "application controlled" in BOTH Open GL and Direct 3d. That will greatly improve your score.

3. You should not compare the 9600XT to the 5200 FX because they are from different price segments. What did you pay for your new card? How do new zealand dollars compare to american?

Can you display your aquamark3 comparison link? Register for free to get access to the ARC.

Which brand of 9600 XT did you get? ATi, Sapphire, etc?

And the standard drivers should work fine for you. Do you have the OVERDRIVE tab available to you in the control panel?

You should download Rage3d Tweak. It is freeware, and opens up a plethora of registry edits for you.
You can overclock too.
Download and information here (http://www.rage3d.com/?node=r3dtweak&74640)

here is a guide to Rage3d tweak (http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/radeon/radeon-2.shtml)

here is another detailed guide (http://www.boogletech.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=32&page=1)

Have fun. :)

That's a great deal. (unbelieveable) Congrats.

And spend a good hour going through those guides, reading and applying settings in Rage3d tweak. That guide, if you follow it correctly, will help improve performance of your card as well.

They will explain all the control panel stuff to you too.

The funny thing about the FX5200 is that now it has been reduced down to the ~$50 range in the US:

see here (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/37/5113-1.htm)

Therefore it really does not have an ATi counterpart anymore (they don't have any $50 cards). That is a good thing for Nvidia--they have conquered the $50 dollar market, I guess.

they wud be the eqivilent of USD $60-$80 over here. lol. they really are a budget POS.

but i found this (http://www.blc.co.nz/GRAPHIGRAPHI.html) geforce fx 5200 valued at $339.

its the 2nd top one.

hahahahah.

hey pitbul, what are your specs? and i totally agree with you... this card kicks ass.
maybe i love it so much because i hated my fx5200

adam, NZ$339 is equal to $200 US. lol, is it me or is that just a 'lil' to expensive for this card??? i think so :)

the rest of the gang, will a 8 x agp mobo increase my scores???

im getting a GA-7N400 PRO2 (http://www.c1computer.co.nz/shop/step1.php?number=1068) and its cheap :)

considering that i have the shittyest mobo on the planet at the moment can some1 give me a good estimate with the benchmarks.

Use Cat 3.10

I find these the most stable
4.1 crash call of Duty on my 9700 and also
but i might add very rarely on 9600XP on another machine.

Just my view

Just use the newest ones 4.1. Ignore the post earlier.

But use the tweak guides I showed you :)

I am using the Omega drivers, personally, just because I like the extra features he includes. Omega's drivers are virtually the same except they have a few different registry settings (nothing that cannot be changed with Rage3d tweak)

Just a general question: what de-crease in perfomance would I see if I upgraded to this card whilst running a 4x AGP mobo?

Weedy

considering right now ur on x8?

DJ X
02-12-2004, 07:23 PM
No my motherboard runs at 4x. but what diffrence would I notice if I brought a card optimised for 8x AGP?

Pitbul
02-12-2004, 08:07 PM
not much of a diffrence. maybe a frame or 2 and loading times might come down a little. i use the 4.1 ATI drivers and never had a problem with Call Of Duty, unless you call HELLA HIGH FRAME RATES a problem!!!

DJ X
02-12-2004, 08:18 PM
Sweet, so it's worth getting if you can only support 4x AGP?

Adam which drivers do you prefer for your ATI card?

I prefer the Omega drivers myself, but I have yet to do an actual benchmark comparison driver vs driver.

Well you see that is a tricky question to answer. Currently, the Omega set is not up for this release, so I am trying out the new set. I like them.

Keep in mind though, that I heavily alter the default settings that come with the Catalyst set. If you install Rage3dtweak, you can see exactly which settings are enabled by default in both the Official and the Omega set, immediately after installing them, by expanding the Open GL and Direct 3d tabs. You need to select "advanced tweaker mode" in the "tweaker" category of the Rage 3d tab by sliding the "select tweaker mode" tab. I read about this by follwing the guides that I linked above.

You see, I studied what the differences between the ATi set and the Omega set, and noticed what is different and what helps my system run the best. For example, there is a setting called "colorfill" and ATi (the offical) does not enable this setting by default. Omega does. Also not enabled in the official drivers is a setting called "Video mem textures" (video mem textures is under the Open GL tab) What that setting does, when enabled, is instruct the Radeon to keep the texture memory "local" thus not lose any performance due to swapping. There is another setting that is available in the Open GL tab of Rage3d tweak called "AGP textures" that tells the Radeon to put the texture memory into AGP memory instead of "local." Well due to the fact that I have 128 mb of local memory on my R9800 Pro, I enable only the Video memory setting. Omega assumes you do too.

There are at least 20 settings that I have different that ATi, because I think it improves image quality of responsiveness (performance). Omega selects nearly 15 of them. I will be back onto Omega when he releases his set. He is an "official" ATi beta tester, and has been working on the 4.2's for a while. I trust him because I have had good experiences with his work (plus, when I had my 9500 he integrated a 9500>9700 mod which dramatically increased performance).

I hope I answered your question, my friend.
