I got the same deal 56k and no dsl in sight
but if you got the money you could try this
D-way (http://www.getdway.com/)
its fast but $$$ ya so its about $80 a month and a hella big ass setup
fee. what it boils down to is a 15 month contract for about $1500
download speed is close to dsl (little slower not by much) but the upload
is slow as hell (i think)
so there you go hope that helps :P

As a post-Satellite user...Don't get it!!
Dial up teh pwnz > Satellite

It is more trouble than its worth and typical ping on a SRS (Satellite-return system: meaning it uses Satellite for Uploading // FYI: DRS is Dial-Return system)...
SRS has about 6000 (thousand) ping
and DRS about 3000 ping...

BAD FOR GAMES lol

most of the time it will work with what you got
but you may have to upgrade to a new one. but
over all you will only have one dish and you will get
tv and internet on it
try this google seach
the search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=satellite+internet+australia&spell=1)
hope that helps
side note you "might" have to get another dish or
switch your satellite tv service
basicly just start calling around and ask thats all you can
do at this point

02-13-2004, 07:48 PM
For satellite, all you need is a dish on your roof and a clear view of the southern sky. :) And yes, it's faster than IDSN and slower than DSL. It's pretty expensive ($600 setup + $50/month in New York), but if it's your only choice, go for it. :)

hey,
i found this list of equipment on a site:

PCI Satellite Receiver Card
60 cm Satellite Dish
LNB
Cabling & Connectors
Mounting Hardware for the Satellite Dish

Now im guessing i dont need the Satellite dish, the Mounting Hardware for the Satellite Dish or the Cabling and connectors but i figure the PCI Card is the "reciever" but what is the LNB????

I dont know where your looking but satellite there
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=67

You could also try wireless http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=18 which is expanding in Australia, list of wireless isp's on the bottom http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isplist.cfm of the page

The cheapest Satellite your find is http://www.ihug.com.au/getultra/satellite.html http://www.ihug.com.au/business/plans.html or http://www.bordernet.com.au/

There' s an unlimited account with ihug but the speed is only 128k, the same as ISDN except with the latency...

One way Satellite is the cheapeast with dial for upload connection...

Two way is expensive as hell.....

You could have ISDN 128k as upload path but that's expensive, extra phone line rental, isdn installation and $16.50 infill(which pays for all ISDN calls)

Satellite in Australia for p2p isnt great due to download caps

Ihug sell it for $249, but you have to go with them and installation is extra $180+ unless you install it yourself.....

Note the PCi cards that IHUG use are usally secondhand...

You will probaly have to get the same pci card as the Isp recommends as there are compatabilty issues with satellites, probaly find one second hand, ihug for instance use skymedia cards..

Also as your reusing a pay tv dish you, you'll have to realign the dish towards the satellite your isp is using i think you either do this using a small gadget forgot what it called, that tells you signal strenth ect
Or you can use a compass and while your fidling with it, have someone at the computer telling you how good the connection is.

I only know a little about it, your better to ask at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=67
there's plenty of people there all In Australia who have set up satellite connections :D

The cheapest connection would be Ihug, there satellite kit is also the cheapeast
You could always look for somthing second hand, which tends to be Ihug equipment any way...

Not southern from Australia.

The satellites are in a geosynchronous orbit.

You would need a clear sky north of you in Australia to point your dish. Not south as mentioned earlier.

You may aswell just see if you can get wireless doesnt have the disadvantages of Satilite due its land based antena.

They are roughly the same, however if you do get it make sure that the ISP has a good review, because they has been trouble with both wirless and Sat.
Also some of the costs are some what stagering here's (http://www.dslreports.com/reviews/2331) a cost table from 1 ISP you'll find most others will be around the same.

Edit: Just look here for any info. (http://www.dslreports.com)
