But really this could be bad since microsoft will be the only ones administering the patches and now that the source is released there will be a surge in virues... <_<

i think it will be time to put microsofts secure computing initiative to the test soon.

it is not the whole operating sytem so you cant compile your own verison of windows which is a bit of a shame but the shell and kernel are there so there should be plenty to play with.

I thought the screen savers would have an entire episode dedicated to this, i mean this is big news.

They didn't even mention it?!

They were all over the adrian lamo case...

I think it was just announced when they were airing though or something.

Yeah, this is pretty big news, considering the hole that they just found that they said is one of the most threating holes yet, the patch just came out too. Damn...is it just me, or does Microsoft have alot of security issues? First all the holes, bugs, and patches, now this! What's next....?

File circulates around to several underground sites and chat rooms
By Robert Lemos

Updated: 05:14 PM PT Feb. 12, 2004

Microsoft is investigating the possibility that a file posted to several underground sites and chat rooms contains some protected source code to Windows 2000.

advertisement

The 203MB file contains the code that appears to be from Microsoft's enterprise operating system, but the code is not complete, said Dragos Ruiu, a security consultant and the organizer of the CanSecWest security conference, who has examined the file listing.

"It was on the peer-to-peer networks and IRC (Internet relay chat) today," Ruiu said. "Everybody has got it; it's widespread now."

The 203MB file expands to just under 660MB, he said, noting that the final code size almost perfectly matches the capacity of a typical CD-ROM. The entire source code, he said, is believed to be about 40GB, meaning that the file circulating Thursday would be only a fraction of the full code base -- if it is authentic.

Ruiu, who has seen the file, believes it to be authentic. "It looks real," he said. "You can't build Windows, however. It's just a bunch of chunks of the operating system."

Microsoft said it is looking into claims that file traders were swapping its proprietary source code.

"The rumor regarding the availability of Windows source code is based on the speculation of an individual who saw a small section of unidentified code and thought it looked like Windows code," Microsoft said in a statement provided to CNET News.com. "Microsoft is looking into this as a matter of due diligence."

Earlier Thursday, a source located a file purporting to be the code on a Web site, but the file was removed from the Internet before it could be completely downloaded.

The potential that the source code has been released has some security experts worried.

"It's definitely not a good thing if black hats have the source code," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager with antivirus company Symantec's security response center. If the source code has been released, "the underground can look at the code without legitimate security researchers being able to find vulnerabilities first."

But Microsoft downplayed any security issue.

In its statement the company said the main concern is the potential theft of its handiwork rather than the possible security threat that such a leak might pose.

"If a small section of Windows source code were to be available, it would be a matter of intellectual property rights rather than security," Microsoft said.

Microsoft zealously guards the source code to the various versions of its Windows operating system, sharing it only with universities and government agencies that sign agreements not to release the code. While working versions of Microsoft's operating system have occasionally leaked to the Internet, actual source code leaks have been rare. (MSNBC is a Microsoft - NBC joint venture.)

Although Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has publicly bragged about the security of Windows, even Microsoft fears the release of its code. In testimony during the Microsoft antitrust trial, Jim Allchin, the company's senior vice president for Windows, said opening up the company's source code could be devastating for the operating system's security.

"The more (that) creators of viruses know about how antivirus mechanisms in Windows operating systems work, the easier it will be to create viruses or disable or destroy those mechanisms," Allchin testified during a May 2002 antitrust trial.

Allchin made the statements while defending the company against legal remedies supported by nine states that would have compelled Microsoft to give away the source code to Internet Explorer.

Allchin's fears are not misplaced, said Thor Larholm, senior security researcher with security consultancy PiVX Solutions.

"Just look at the amount of vulnerabilities that are discovered without the source code," he said. "The majority of Windows servers are still running Windows 2000. Furthermore, Windows 2000 has a lot of shared code that is still being used by Windows XP and Windows Server 2003."

However, other security experts believe that fears about a leak leading to the widespread discovery of vulnerabilities in the code are misplaced.

"Theoretically, to a good reverse engineer, all code is open source," said a Microsoft security consultant who asked not to be identified. He added that the size of the compressed file that was being passed around the Internet sounded about right.

In the end, however, the mistake that made Microsoft's code public might result in benefits similar to open-source code, Ruiu said.

"Short term, there might be problem (as bugs are found), but long term it might be good for them," he said. "Their code might become more secure."

bits and peices of source code, not the full source.

Microsoft can keep their shitty code for all I care. Besides being able to exploit their o.s., which most people have been doing for over a decade now without their "protected" source.

What are you gonna do? Build an ntkernel from scratch?

I heard that Windows XP has some source code from Linux (getting off-track of win2000). I heard it was the only way to keep some of the new features stable... I mean just look at Windows ME. What a disaster!! Can anyone confirm this? I wouldn't be surprised though. <_<

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 12, 2004 -- On Thursday, Microsoft became aware that portions of the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code were illegally made available on the Internet. It’s illegal for third parties to post Microsoft source code, and we take such activity very seriously.

We are currently investigating these postings and are working with the appropriate law-enforcement authorities.

At this point it does not appear that this is the result of any breach of Microsoft’s corporate network or internal security.

At this time there is no known impact on customers. We will continue to monitor the situation.

the full uncompressed source code for windows is about 40 gigs big.

this is only part of the code but it could be of massive help to certain open source products trying to have better compatibility with windows.

wine for instance would end up including code from people that have viewed this source code.
Im just waiting for some clever bunch of programers to try to run their linux kernels under windows that would be fun.

I was reading up and it appears those weird named .eml files

win2k/private/genx/ie/tokens/words of wisdom from dennis.eml
are left over from being infected by nimidia. it appears a virus scanner has cleaned the files since they are zero in length but it must have left a backdoor open for the code to be stolen.

microsoft have confirmed that a portion of their code is circulating
here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A37648-2004Feb12.html)

edit: it appears this code was leaked from mainsoft (http://www.mainsoft.com/) somebody is gonna be in big trouble.

I saw a story a while back on uk tv that 98/me source codes were stolen by hackers. At the time i thought it was just a ploy by microsoft to sell more copies of its (then) newly released windows xp.

Does microsoft have another os they can release in a hurry  , maybe the previews of longhorn were misleading and they have a fully working version ready to launch.

great m$ corrupted the torrent

i dont think you can corrupt a torrent. it is split into chunks and if any chunk becomes corrupt it is redownloaded.

the best m$ can do is either get the seeder shutdown, the tracker shutdown or have massive amount of bandwidth to corrupt a small part of every chunk so people have to keep redownloading but that is just a stall.

it is possible to create currupt parts its very hard but im sure microsfot are capable of doing this...

Was any XP source code released? Will anyone be able to create (new) exploits that wont be picked up by my av and firewall for XP?

Looks like they're gonna have to pull another OS out of their ass.
Here comes Windows XP Second Edition.

Another OS up their sleeve? Nope, Lornhorn's all they got.

XP sourcecode released... nope, but XP is based on a lot of the same code, so.... kind of. If a virus can infect 2000, NT, first of all it'll probably infect any windows machine, but hit XP as well. And if it's gonna be something a virus scanner can't get rid of, probably not. The sourcecode is very smal, but it wasn't virus scanner sourcecode. But if one can understand how a virus scanner ineteracts with say... the NTKernel, that could be bad. So there may or may not be some bad viruses coming. But if anti-viruses can't hack it, then there will just be a specialized virus removall tool, like the ones listed HERE (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html)

I love this.

This kinda sucks for some developers though. If a developer wants to work on an open source project and has already seen M$ source code, then admits it, he probabloy won't be accepted.... :(

Don't do something you'll regret. M$ code isn't that good anyway B)
