If you get a CRT then you can get a 19" one.

Also with a lot higher refresh rate.

You can get 17inch tfts for reasonable prices now, 19inches still for the big walleted! However if you want to use it for games, or rather, if you play lots of games, then tft is not really the way to go. this is simply due to the response time (no not refresh rate) of the monitor's screen. while CRT's are basically instantanious, providing clear sharp images even in the thick of battle or whatever! TFT's on the other hand have much slower response times, cheaper ones looking terrible on anything more demanding than solitaire. Basically the screen is blurry and colours tend to mix which ain't good.

TFT's are gradually improving though with response times down to about 16ms on decent models but even this isn't good enough for DVDs and games really. At a push you can get away with DVD's when viewing from a distance, but st in your PC desk chair a few feet away and you'll see the smears of colour etc due to the response lag.

To be honest you're not going to notice the difference too much, ewpecially after a while when you get used to it. But if you are a serious gamer, or watch lots of DVD's at close range, then your money would be better spent on a top of the range 19 or 21inch crt. Some of the high end models really are fantastic and will wipe the floor with any TFT.

So at the moment, only advantages of tfts are easier viewing (you don't sit in front of an xray machine firing electrons through a screen at you) and of course space, and they do look good enough to eat!

Downside, response times are still a bit too low for hard core gaming/dvd viewing.

I've never had any of those problem you've described in games/dvds with either of my LCDs. I know this one has a 21ms refresh and my others must be the same or more, and I've never noticed.
