This is a compiled list of available Media Players that you can use in Linux to play 99% of all video codecs. Mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
This is by far the best Movie player for Linux in existance. That is not my opinion. That is the Linux Community truth. You may have trouble installing this masterpiece from source, which is the only way it is distributed from their site. I recommend you find an rpm version for "your" distro for easier installation. And you probably will get dependency issues with even an rpm but simply install all the required dependencies by rpm as well and before you know it you will be running Mplayer. Oh so you want to play windows codecs .......... http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/

Xine http://xinehq.de/
Probably the second best Movie player for Linux. It has a lot of frontend gui's for it. http://xinehq.de/index.php/releases There is also a Mozilla Plugin avalable for xine.

Sinek http://sinek.sourceforge.net/
Another simple gtk front end for xinelibs.

Xmms with smpeg plugin http://www.xmms.org/
Sort of the winamp for Linux. Xmms is quite powerful as a simple skinnable mp3 player and audio player, but with the smpeg plugin you can play video as well http://www.xmms.org/plugins.php

Xmovie http://heroinewarrior.com/xmovie.php3
For playing extremely high quality uncompressed movies on an older machine. This is also where you can get the Quicktime for Linux app at. http://heroinewarrior.com/quicktime.php3

Videolan-client http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Videolan pretty much speaks for itself. It works just as great on Linux as it does on Windows.

Divx http://www.divx.com/divx/linux/
Allows you play divx video in Linux. Divx is pretty popular nowadays and this is a must have. There is also a Divx "Player" for Linux that rocks but its really hard to find..........*edit* nevermind you can get the player here http://linux.tucows.com/top_picks_B-preview.html

AviFile http://avifile.sourceforge.net/
Hehe, some of my best movies are avi's. This is also another must have for Linux Multimedia users.

Xtheater http://xtheater.sourceforge.net/
Not only an Avi player but it playes mpeg, audio, network streams, and asf files.
