hey, i'm trying to get the paris hilton thing off of the bitorrent right now, and it's pretty popular so i know there's a lot of users trying to get it, and yeah, i know this uestions been asked before, but i never got a full answer....but anyways, i'm using shadow client and i have dsl, and normally can max out at 150kb/sec, but for some reason, even with this popularity in the file, i still have very limited transfer speeds.....i'm talking like 2-10kb/sec at most on average, and it's like that throughout the day, even when i try to reboot and stuff...and i've spent like over a day and a half straight trying to download this shit and i still only have like 190mb of it completed, normally downloading a 290 mb file from kazaa or something on average would take me 3 and a half hours, but this one, it's been well over 8 hours.....what's GOING ON!??!!? i always have this transfer speed limit problem when i try downloading other stuff from bitorrent too and it's pissin me off.....i set the "settings to dsl/cable fastline" too, because before that the default was at unlimited, and i wasn't getting any transfer at all........but yeah....it says 3 peers, 14 seeds..dont' know what tha tmeans, but can someone help me configure or try to solve this problem so that i can start to use bitorrent correctly like the rest of you people?

Hi,
Calm down, be paticene it all depends on the speeds of the other users are giving, On downloads I can get anywhere from 5kbs to 400kb/s, I too am grabbing the Paris video and I am getting 5-15kbs,
If youve been downloading that long, your speeds will be picking up, btw, how much are you uploading? Do you have any other torrent open?

nope, that's the only one that's opened...the thign is that this 2-15kb/sec happens to me on every freakin file that i try in the supernova links.i don't know why either, and when i check out screenshots of people from previous threads here, their downloading at like 77 kb/sec or something....well..i left the default settings of "dsl fast setting" so currently i have downloaded 22 mb and uploaded 21 mb.... so i guess that thing on the bottom of that window is true...you're upload is proportional to your download.....

Do what I do use isdn with 8k and 2/3 up or the slow dsl 10-15 and 4/5 up,you will have to leave it awhile till the program settles down and stops looking for peers etc.In other words I play with it and don't just set it,yes you get behind with your upload but thats no problem just leave it on when finished.
Most of the time I can get 70-100 on the go and a steady 50+ all the time, and as said it will depend on the others in your group,I like too as you are sharing to others which are also SHARING not like KaZaa. <_<
If I get very few in the group I cancel come off then 20 minutes later go back on this seem's to help aswell by looking for other peers/seeders.Before all this I too had your kind of speeds may be "cheating" but I find it works for me and I always upload my fair share at least the same as I get.
Worth a try I think if either works or doesn't 3/14 doesn't seem to be alot I normally get 20+.Using SHAD0W's.

If you have a software firewall (even the one built into Win XP) or a router (which lets multiple computers share one internet connection) AND you don't configure them correctly, speeds WILL SUCK on BitTorrent.
So the question is:
Do you have a router or firewall -- and does BitTorrent tell you that it is firewalled?

it doesn't tell me that it's firewalled, but the thing is is that LIGHT IS ALWAYS FUCKIN YELLOW!!!!! it's never green, no matter how long i wait.........i actually was able to finish downloading the paris hilton video after like 22 hours of letting my computer on.....with that shadow client.....i dont' know why...i'm using windows 2000.......now what do i do?
if its always yellow and u have a router forward them
if you have a firewall. just allow bt to use port 6881-6889 or whatever it uses

aye, same here. I've never seen bt go over 10 kb per second. Is there a guide somewhere that tells you what to do to optimise your sytem for bt?

That yellow light means it's almost certainly firewalled.
You MUST solve that to get better download speeds.
What firewall/s and antivirus software do you have running and are you on a router?
Even many antivirus programs now include software firewalls which can seriously cripple download+upload speeds on programs like BitTorrent. You have to ALLOW (nearly, if possible) full access for BitTorrent through them.
And port-forwarding for routers is a must. Try DMZ zone as a last resort to see if that helps.

is there a sight somewhere that tells me what process's i do and don't need to speed up my BT connection? i have the fastest connection possible locally (cable) yet i see no more than 1 or 3 kb per sec!!!

Then if you wish to fix the problem you need to learn more about computers -- particularly yours.
Norton Antivirus 2002 may include a firewall program in it. You'll need to read up about it.
Also, I hope/presume you've updated your antivirus software. (...using the auto-update or manual update methods inside that program.) If you haven't, new viruses since 2002 may be undetected by that software.

Wish that was the case for me...I've uploaded 600MB and only downloaded 150MB. I'm getting abysmal dl rates of around 1/2KB for over a day. Not on a router or behind a firewall either. Sorry to say it but after I get this file I'm not gonna bother with BT....the principle of porportional upload to download is great but in reality I've never experianced that. :frusty:
