i have windows 98 right now and i need to upgrade to windows xp but everytime i try to install i get to the point where it tries to load the ACPI PLUG AND PLAY devices and the it just stops. It gives me the error: "FILE ACPI.SYS CAUSED AN UNEXPECTED ERROR (48896) AT LINE 5897 IN D:\XPSP1\BASE\BOOT\SETUP\SETUP.C.
I hope someone know about this problem and can help me out. Thanx

Bad copy? upgrading is always a bad idea too . Is this a laptop? Do you have a floppydrive?

Hardware probem. Xp is probably having trouble with one of your hardware devices.

If that copy of xp has sp1 integrated I would not use that and install a copy of regular xp with no service pack and then once you get a succesful install go to ms and get your sp1.
