My all time favourite - great story, some great ham acting, but the two guys who deliver it do so with fantastic aplomb....

"The Man Who Would Be King"

Michael King & Sean Connery, backed by Rudyard Kipplings wonderful story.

I'm sure many would disagree with me, but I can watch this film again and again!

Pure entertainment!

If I had to choose one....

"A Bronx Tale"

Robert Deniros directorial debut, written by Chazz Palminteri.

Why?

Because "nobody cares." (watch the movie to get it.)

oh...

another would be "Fight Club"

because no one can f*ck with the underground, because we are your average people with intent to obtain that which all industries sell at inflated rates. So we'll rape them and take what we want from them. It's what they deserve.

I thought of a few more, also added some reasons and info.

Ice Age, loved this movie. Was very pleasantly surprised after downloading it for my kids and finding it very entertaining for myself as well.

Gorky Park (1983) When three faceless corpses are discovered in Moscow's Gorky Park, the Moscow militia's top investigator, Arkady Renko (William Hurt), is assigned to the case. An honest Soviet official, Renko uncovers a murky and dangerous plot involving sinister KGB agents, the corrupt Soviet government, and a powerful American businessman. Although many of the Russians in the film speak with an English accent (all the dialogue is in English), GORKY PARK proves to be a provocative, fast-paced thriller that captures all of the intrigue and suspense in Martin Cruz Smith's best-selling novel of the same name. Director Michael Apted handled the thriller genre before in SQUEEZE and AGATHA, and the experience shows in GORKY PARK; there are so many twists and turns in the plot, viewers are constantly kept off balance. A supporting cast of Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, and Joanna Pacula (in her first starring role) back up Hurt with solid performances.

Field Of Dreams (Guys normally got this movie, however most if not all women never understood it)

World According To Garp - The movie is about the life of T.S. Garp (Robin Williams), the “bas-tard son of Jenny Fields” - a nurse. The T.S. stands for Technical Sergeant - Jenny Fields (Glen Close), as we find out along the way, impregnates herself by a soldier named Technical Sergeant Garp. She wants a baby but not a man to complicate her life so she hops aboard a soldier in the hospital who is badly injured but has a constant erection. All he can say is Garp, Garp, Garp. When she makes this choice to rape this guy he utters one more word.... you’ll have to watch to hear what that is...... We get to watch Garp grow up at the New England school where his mother works. We see him become interested in wrestling, sex (lots) and writing which all play important roles in his life. As Garp enters college and sets his sights on writing his mother takes up the craft as well. She sees a hooker in New York who she offers to pay to ask questions over coffee - then this weird woman hands the hooker money to sleep with her son! The indirect result of this is her feminist novel entitled “Sexual Suspect” which is extremely well timed with the Women’s Liberation movement - it instantly become a best seller. This path leads her to open a home for people with all sorts of unusual issues that need healing of one sort or another, including the Ellen Jamesians who cut out their own tongues to honor a little girl who was raped and whose tongue was cut out so she wouldn’t identify the rapist. Also we meet Roberta Muldoon (John Lithgow) who is an ex football star and is now a woman. Garp’s marriage to Helen takes many interesting turns - they both enter into affairs after the birth of their second son; Garp with the allegedly 18 year old baby sitter and Helen, his wife, with one of her students. Watch the movie to discover what happens to Helen’s student when they meet for the last time as she breaks it off with him. You WILL squirm here, I promise you. Doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or woman. The performances of Robin Williams, Glen Close and John Lithgow are among their finest, in my opinion.

I think that this was my first chance many years ago to see Williams as anything other than a comedian - what a tremendous actor he has turned out to be! I loved this movie - if you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. You’ll enjoy it too. (totally borrowed synopsis, but I agree with every word and could not have bettered it)

Platoon - war epic

Fort Apache, the Bronx (1981) A controversial, grittily realistic depiction of life among cops in one of New York's toughest precincts, with Paul Newman as a beat cop who must buck the system when he learns that a fellow officer has killed an innocent street kid. Ed Asner, Danny Aiello, Ken Wahl, Pam Grier also star

I agree with Bard about "The man who would be king", great movie. Anyway, a movie with Michael Caine & Sean Connery both as leads can't lose.
A couple of favourites for me would have to be
The Keep (dir. a young Michael Mann). A bit rough around the edges but great atmosphere and soundtrack.
Black cat, White cat (Dir: Emir Kusturica), Comedy set in former Yugoslavia. Bloody funny (!!) with another great soundtrack. With subtitles but don't let that put you off.
Seven. Classic.
Predator 2. monsters, sci fi, guns, lots of blood. Fantastic.
Brother (dir. and star "beat" Takeshi Kitano). Understated cool.
I could keep going but I won't bore the pants off of yer.

Some recent great movies:

And some of my all time favourites which I didn't find on any list so far:

Cinema Paradiso (1988, Italian, fantastic movie)
Blade Runner (1982)
Midnight Express (1978)
Papillon (1973)
Brazil (1985)
The remains of the day (1993)
Picknick at Hanging Rock (1975)
The last wave (1977)
Smilla's sense of snow (1997)

hmm, this is tough, err, well

the first 2 starwars, hope is better than empire, the other 3 (possibly 4?) don't have as many classic moments that i could remember, also the special editions just make the films longer and add boring bits, like in

lord of the rings - waayya to much talking and elves for my liking (maybe a few more orcs needed?) well everyone seems to like it so it gets in

leon - love this film i almost cried at the end!

the gaked gun - so damn funny

iron monkey - hong kong kung fu movie, anyone heard of it? directed by yuen woo ping action director of:

the matrix - the starwars of the 90's, full of classic moments and quotes

The Abyss
Fire In The Sky
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Matrix
Alien
The Fifth Element
Total Recall
Jaws 1
The Shining
E.T. (Yes i like it... the old version)

I like more but Fire in the Sky and Close Encounters are my favorites!

Just to reitterate my point on To Kill A Mockingbird. If you did not like this movie or at least think it was beautifully done, then it would suggest you may have missed the point or just do not understand how things were back then, the movie broke new ground and did so with brilliant style. I had read the book prior to seeing the movie, both were well done and entertained me and still do to this day.

Also I would have to say MASK (not "The MASK" but MASK with CHER), wonderfully poignant movie.

Stargate (Kurt Russel), this movie was amazing for it's time, however I have become to love the TV series, the original is now classified a classic my book.

Run (Starring Patrick Dempsey) was an entertaining although very little known piece of work.

THEM, classic B&W movie about giant killer ants, made me unable to sleep as a child, still love to watch it when it is on.

Any great movie thread must surely include Withnail and I. The only film Richard E Grant has ever made that is good. Impossible to watch without laughing out loud. Student classic, which may be a handicap i concede.

A movie I really, really like and can't seem to find on Kazaa is CHOPPER . It's a film about Australia's most notorious criminal - Mark Brandon CHOPPER Read. It is very funny, very violent - what more could you ask for. The star Eric Bana is the new Incredible Hulk, I think. Anyway he's brilliant in this film and gives an utterly compelling performance.

Australia's best film.

Better than Romper Stomper, Mad Max, the lot!!

10/10

The book is a cracking read as well!!!

Donnie Darko (not popular but a MUST SEE mind fuck)
The Matrix (of course, can't go wrong with originality)
The Ring (One of my favorite scary movies)
Jacob's Ladder (An older movie, but also great)
The Shawshank Redemption (Literally no action or out of the park scenes...but hell I can watch that over and over and not get tired of it, so it must be good)
The Lord of the Rings I and II (Not a big book reader or LOTR's fan but hell, those are some GREAT movies)

My overall favorite would sadly have to be The Matrix, even without the hype that is honestly my idea of the perfect movie, I'm downloading it again as I type this...almost done :D . Can't wait for Reloaded, I just might leave the house to see it!

1) South Park : Bigger, Longer & Uncut

And in no particular order

Stand By Me
The Goonies
The Terminator
Kiss Of The Dragon
Bring It On (Shit film, but Kirsten Dunst is a cheerleader)
Empire Records
Half Baked
Empire Strikes Back
Road Trip

As you can probably guess i'm a massive south park fan,
and i like to relax when watching a film, so that means no complicated plots that require me to use my brain too much.

Kudos to Wallace Askew for including "Chasing Amy" I wish I had thought to add that one.

Add- "If..."
When I was in school the local theater showed "If..." and "Barbarella" as the midnight feature and packed the house every weekend. I think "If..." has held up better over the long run, but Jane Fonda sure was a babe...
