pcanywhere can be used to access your pc over the net from another pc if thats what you want.

blah!, damn simultaneous posts
missed yours rob :)

can it choose a directory to save the file to?
(would like to see if this can be done w/o another app,
but if needed another app is ok)

I havent tried it very often, but you should be able to select the directory. But i can't be sure.

pcanywhere is a bit overkill just to transfer a few files. i would look into setting up a sftp server or ssh.

either can be used to transfer files securely.

openssh for windows (http://lexa.mckenna.edu/sshwindows/)
filezilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/) excellent ftp client and server.

A vpn connection is possible but depending on where your connecting from and how often your connecting.............it may be a little impractible just to transfer a few files. It would be much more simpler to go with 4play's suggestion especially since ssh connections are pretty secure for the most part.

Or

This might help http://www.invisionfilemanager.com/ :)
