i need to do a clean install on a clean pc. it is a brand new hard drive. my question is- do i need a "bootable" version to install windows?

As far as I know... yes. You do. Could be wrong though...

The normal XP setup program doesn't run in DOS but there is one in the i386 folder on the CD that does.
