I can pick up an Athlon XP2600+ for 130 bucks canadian from a fella who works at a local computer shop. I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with this cpu.How overclockable is it , as good as the 2500+?
The seller told me he thinks it is a thoroughbread core cpu, even though all the 2600+ cpu's I have found online are Barton's so I figure it is likely a barton so it should be a decent cpu. What do you all think.

Oh yeah, I will be upgrading from an XP1900+ which I have sold for 80 bucks canadian.

uhh when you go to buy it make sure it IS a barton, toehrwise go for a 2500. Im sure that if the 2600 is a barton it should be just as overclockable, also make sure you get pc3200 ram if you dont have it already that way you will be able to put the fsb up to 400mhz.

I've got 256mb Kingston pc3200 right now.I just sold my stick of 512 pc2100 for 80 bucks and then took that 80 bucks and bought 256 mb of Kingston, sucks selling my 512 for what it cost me for only half the ram even though my system still performs just as well now as it did with the 512.
I will likley pick it up tomorrow,I want to get it today but we just had a blizzard here and 90% of the city is shut down ,pretty nasty stuff having 80 cm of snow fall in 20 hours with winds in the 100km/h range, lol .

You're in the maritimes?

How much can you get the 2500+ for?

The 2500+ goes for about 137+taxes and I can get this one for just 130 and it is a retail. I can't get the extra cash together for the 2500+ right now though,so I am thinking I will still be doing quite well with this one. I just wasn't sure if there was a 2600+ that was a thoroughbread.I have only been able to find Barton 2600+ on the net. He did say that it had 333mhz fsb though,so this should make it a barton because if it was a thoroughbread wouldn't it be 266 fsb?

And yes sir I am in the Maritimes. It got so bad last night that they actually took the plows off the roads.I live on a big hill which they usually work real hard to keep clear but they haven't even bothered with it since last night around supper time, there is a 5 foot drift all way across the road there now, we have no transit system until later this afternoon (maybe).it's quite the mess.

at greenlyph the 2500 is only $133, i'm sure you could find/steal 3 bucks from somewhere if you really do want the 2500. also greenlyph is close to where you live, as far as i remember.
HERE (http://www.greenlyph.com/product_info.php?products_id=37)
also at greenlyph the 2600 is priced at $154, so getting it for 130 would be quite a deal.

I have a Tbred 2600+.
I also have PC 2700 memory.
On my Asus board this combination will run quite happily at 200x11.5 (2.3 GHz) with a 1.71 vCore.
No stability or heat issues at all.

I don't think that the FSB is the difference between the Barton and the Tbred.
It's the L2 cache...256Mb versus 512 Mb.

The Barton core 2500+ has gained it's fabled reputation primarily because of it's cheap price...if you can get the 2600+ as cheaply I'd say go for it.

That sounds pretty cool,I think I am going to go for this one and not the 2500+. i figure if I can run it at 2.3 ghz that should be sufficient for the little bit of gaming that I do.I could probably get away with using my 1900+ for a whlie yet but you know how it is with upgrading.

And for those who weant to see a couple of pics of our lovely blizzard, here is a link Blizzard pics (http://www.reality-check.ca/viewtopic.php?t=6266)

Wait for them to clear the snow from the blizzard and by that time maybe the prices will have dropped.

Note: I'm not saying that clearing the snow will be long. I'm saying that prices drop really quickly.

actually man,for the 2600+ I'm spending money I don't even have. I got mouths to feed here man,got two kids and a wife to support and I don't really make that much money.I have my 1900+ sold for 80 bucks of it so I still have to dish out 50 more.I don't even have that right now.I have some more gear for sale to try to make up as much of that cash as possible. Things are tight man.

And VB,the prices just may go down before we get dug out.All government offices are closed until at least monday, most malls and stores are closed. It's the most snow I've seen in the last 18-20 yeasr here in Nova Scotia.

Yes, I would go for the 2600 anyway, over the 2500, if both are almost the same price, the 2600 even being cheaper!
and yeah i know what ya mean by the snow! I live in NS too, and it's wild here. we have drifts in the middle of the road that are over my head, and i'm 6'1! it's really crazy out there, I'll be snowed in here for a long time, I live in the valley, so the plows don't even run regularly on a normal day, and now they've issued them to stop running. So i'm guessing the roads here won't be cleared before monday at least.
that is definatly the most snow i've seen come down in a matter of 24 hours!
and yeah go for the 2600
cheers

Kai

Something is a bit off with those prices.

Canadian prices here are:

2500+ Barton --- $125.00
2600+ Barton --- $139.00

Also if you want to mail-order... Check out: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...u=CP2-XP25003BC (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=495333&Sku=CP2-XP25003BC)

Note: The mail-order product is OEM.

Wouldnt the 2500 be better then the 2600 though, because it is a barton core and has twice the L2 cache?

johnboy27
02-20-2004, 08:11 PM
Yes the barton does and it would probably be a bit better but I just don't see myself needing anything better. Like I said,I could survive another year using my xp1900+ .I just want to upgrade for the sake of upgrading . I figure why not upgrade if I can,not so much upgrading because I need to .My current system runs flawlessly.I have had absolutely no problems with anything lately. I probably won't even overclock it that much.My 1900+ is only oc'd about 80 mhz, mind you the 1900 is not very oc friendly.

I still think that $130 is too much for the 2600+ Thoroughbred when the 2500+ Barton can be had for $90 after rebate.

Actually VB,there was a guy on a local forum here that I frequent and he was asking why those CPU's were so cheap on tigerdirect.com (or whatever it is) and after really looking into it he fopund out that they charge 30 bucks shipping to Nova Scotia,Newfoundland,New Brunswick,PEI, and even Quebec. And another thing, the coupon for the mail in rebate is only good until the 23rd of this month.

Here is a quote from their site about their "Free shipping"

"The shipment of orders to certain remote locations, with postal codes starting with the following: (A0A-A9Z, B0A-B9Z, C0A-C9Z, E0A-E9Z, G0B-G0L, G0T-G0W, G3L-G4Z, J0M-J0M, J9E-J9E, J9K-J9Z, T0A-T0B, T0E-T1X, T6W-T7W, T8P-T8Z, T9G-T9Z, V0A-V0L, V0N-V1L, V1N-V2V, V3G-V3G, V8A-V8K, V9G-V9Z, X0A - X9Z , Y0A - Y9Z), or items over 60lbs are excluded from this offer. In these instances, a shipping and handling fee will be visible using the shipping calculator and will be added to your order during the checkout process."

They for some reason consider Nova Scotia "Remote" , even quebec is considered remote. What a joke, their whole free shipping offer is a scam.

Well is the beginning of your postal code within that list?

I'm in Quebec and my code isn't listed there.

Consider that you don't get the rebate and you have to pay for shipping.

That's 109 + shipping. So 139 right?

You said that it's 137 where you are? Sounds expensive considering you don't have to pay for shipping.

Local stores here sell the Retail boxed version for 125.

I would check around other stores in your area for a better price.

Does newegg.com ship there? Just a thought. Bought my new parts from there including the 2500 Barton retail $90USD free shipping.

These (http://pccyber.ca/scrItem.asp?product_subtypes_id=76&product_types_id=19&product_id=1377) guys have the 2500+ for 117, that's the cheapest I've seen it in Canada myself. They're located in Ontario I believe
