At the prompt type:

FORMAT C:

And press return.

Note: Replace the C with whatever drive letter you want to format if you have more than one.

if u have to delete partitions type fdisk instead of format and go to delete primary partition then select the one to delete then create a new one using full size and after it is created u have to restart then when u get to teh prompt again type format C:

what operating system and what file system are you using? also what version of the startup disc are you using? is it a 98,me or xp startup disc?

the operating system is xp and the startup disk is also xp

Do you have the XP CD?

You can bootup with that CD and there are tools to partition and format there.

Btw.

startup disk is also xp

using MS-DOS startup disk

Those two things aren't the same.

the xp startup disc will not work, it is missing teh format and fdisk tools <_< try to get a hold of a 98 or me startup disc, u might be able to find one on the internet, they have the tools that you need to get teh job done...or you could use the xp install cd and b4 it installs it wwill ask where to install and you can delete the partition then recreate it and format from there.

good luck.

i try that all ready but when i format its say that this disk cant be formated and when i try it again it formated fine it just took me longer than usual and when i when to install windows it freezes half way

a friend told me that its the disk thats mess up and to fix it you have to formatted using startup disk

he said that while formatting it will look for unreadeble sectors and block them or something like that

thats basically what i told you to do...you highlite the partition giving you the trouble then press d to delete it and it will have to confirm then you press c and it will create a new partition...you choose the size and it creates it then you choose to install to that partition and it will say:

format in ntfs
format in ntfs (quick)
format in fat32
format in fat32 (quick)

choose one of the non-wuick ones...

I see you have problems with that drive.

Maybe you can save it with killdisk: http://www.killdisk.com/

If these attempts don't work then I suggest you get a new drive.

when i download the file from http://www.killdisk.com/ i have to unzipped it and copy the files to a floppy disk but when i go to unzipped it say they are no files to unzipped :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

I don't know what the problem is. I just downloaded the zip file. It contains 5 files.

HCT

it say that the file is invalid or corrupt

did you unzipped?

Virtualbody1234

Yes. I unzipped it fine.

I suggest you delete it and redownload it.

Try doing a ram test, you can get a testing program here (http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp) . I had similar problems with my wifes computer I built her a while back and it turned out to be bad ram. Give it a try,it couldn't hurt.

glad to here it works, usually after a reinstall startup is pretty slow and everyhting else seems pretty slow too but once youve restarted a few times and defragmented it is much faster than before.

When you've only got fresh Windows on there, it boots about as fast as it's ever going to and without the need for defragging; it certainly ain't gonna get quicker as you add more apps/games. You could speed it up a little by removing unwanted trash and tweaking here n there though.

i disagree the first ime it starts up it is changing windows files\updating them etc. and the startup is slower...expecially slower after installing sp1 or sp2. After everything has been installed and it has be restarted a few times every file will be updated and it will become faster.

im just talking on my own experience with every computer ive ever insaled an operating system, which is quite a few.
