thinking of upgrading my xp2100 to a xp2600 ( all my mobo can handle). but also my mobo only can handle pc 2100 ram so if i cant upgrade my ram any higher i will lose the fsb? also i have a ak32a shuttle mobo ... is this mobo crap or what ...should i jus get a new mobo altogether iam also running 768 ram 1 256 stick and a 512

hmm...a new mobo might make things easier :) Cuz then you could get a barton or w/e....but

Your board supports PC2100 which is 266Mhz, which is the same as your CPU you would be getting...so it would work fine.

Your XP2600+ ( either Tbred OR Barton core) will easily go beyond a FSB of 200, so the RAM will be your limiting factor.
Since you would like to run your RAM and the chip synchronous and you can't go beyond PC2100 with your current board, you might want to change that also.

Certain boards ( my Asus, for instance) will allow the multiplier to be unlocked with software...a handy feature if you plan on OCing this rig.

Clocker! Hey we got the same board I believe...A7N8X. What software will allow me to unlock my multiplier? cuz my CPU runs like 45 full load..so i could get it faster i think..just wana change the multiplier cuz i dont wana mess up my ram. I had my FSB at 210 which was 2310 and my memory at 420 and it seemed to kidna get wierd so i droped it....whats the software tho?

In my understanding, you only need the unlocking software if you can't actually change the fsb. As you have the A7N8X, the board comes unlocked, thus you don't need the software :)

Well I can change the FSB, but i wana change my multiplier so i can go up more haha

BigDawg, the board should have already done this automatically.
Don't you have options listed in your multiplier menu?

if this mbo is garbage some 1 got any suggestions for me for a good cheap mobo say in the $100 US range hell maybe even $50 seeing i want a new cpu ...the 1 i stated above

Well your current board wont support a 2500XP. You will have to get a new board. An Asus A7N8X is very nice and is $80USD. Thats what I have and I love it.

@Clocker- Yeah, It lets me change the multiplier in the BIOS, but when I do it always changes it back down to 100MhzX10 lol which I guess is the default...is there any easy way to unlock my chip or nething?

its not the board that is locked bigdawg its the actaul cpu

dunno if this helps click here (http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/guides/unlockbartonwk43/unlockbartonwk43-2.htm)

The board supports the 2600+ with a FSB of 266MHz only. Not the 333MHz version.
The memory support is also limited to 266MHz.

if you get the 2500 then you should be able to overclock it to 3200 speeds so yes you will notice a big difference:

you are going from 266 to a 333 mhz front side bus plus if you overclock you will have a 400mhz front side bus.

you are also doubling the L2 cache.

bigdawgfoxx got his to 3200 speeds and he has stock cooling, but he also didnt use the thermal pad he bought some arctic silver (i think thats what he's got)

arctic silver? does that go in between the processor and the fan?

No, it goes between the CPU and the heatsink.

Yah, stick with stock stuff unless you see your temps getting to high. I have 4 case fans too lol.

i have just the one case fan, a small desktop fan blowing air into the case, my case is opened, and my motherboard monitor tells me my temps are 63 degees © for my cpu, and 30 for my case... is that alright?????
is that good enough for the upgrade to a barton 2500 oc to 3200.? or should i take more precautions

@dray_02, I think you should look into the fact that there is a temperature reading inaccuracy with that board. Nothing to worry about but many sites have information where people report that it shows temps 10 to 15° higher than it really is. I'm sure that future BIOS revisions will correct this. I also know that the information about the issue isn't clearly documented as some people say that the temps are accurate. I have thoroughly tested and came to the conclusion that the temps do show higher than they really are.

dray, even if what virtualbody said is correct (temps 10-15 degrees higher than actual) they are still high (48-53c) so i would, when i upgraded the cpu, clean up the wires, make them nice and neat, make most of them hidden if possible. Then add another fan if possible. btw, after the moherboard upgrade did you install the cpu with new thermal paste or did you reuse the old pad that was already on hte heatsink?

Dray_04

yer i put the exact same heatsink, fan and processor on.... just the standard shit. and by jeeezus was it dirty... i gave it a good clean! put new thermal paste on it, then stuck it back on ma mobo.... is that ok? will adding another case fan make a difference??? thers no place to mount it.... (unless i stick it under the harddrive,,..becase thers sum grills around ther.. that look like it could..i think lol.

my case is alwayz opened, thats ok?
