Actually, when you have vertical sync enabled, if you have a quality* graphics card, I think that 75 Hz is optimal, in other words, the optimal sync will be 75 frames per second.

I have a 17in Sharp TFT monitor and can't set it higher than 60 hertz before my desktop icons look like shit.

Apparently it is because the coding in Windows XP is flawed and it needs fixed.

Microsoft posted an article on their website, but it still hasn't resolved the situation. I have an ATI 9800 128MB Pro with the latest drivers, as well as my monitor.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;311403 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311403)

Microsoft do know how to mess up people's lives. Everyone's telling me that as soon as I manage to fix the refresh rate I'll notice a huge difference but it's like waiting for P2P sharing to become legal worldwide.

I'm on the verge of giving up.

Interference from indoor lighting can lead to strobing effects. The nearer to supply frequency you get the worse the problem becomes.

So 50Hz and multiples would be bad in Europe. Similarly, 60Hz and multiples are not a good idea in N. America.

no it doesnt, see how it says plug and play monitor, that means that the driver is not installed, download the driver for your monitor or put in the cd if you have one, then restart, then go back to that screen and make sure hide modes this monitor cannot display is ticked off: then it will show the real ones.

Refresh rate should not affect performance. It is the speed at which data is sent from the graphics card to the monitor AFTER the processing has been done. If processing does not change the data between refresh cycles then the same data is simply sent again, the processing is not affected.

If processing is so fast that data can change during a refresh cycle, you can get an effect called "tearing", because you get part of the old image and part of the new image. For this reason if you are using high frame rates it is usually advisable to use vsync to clock frame changes.
