hiya all,

well here i am with $5000 aus in my pocket and i want to build a rig which will blow the roof off

basicaly i want the best and the fastest of everything, overclocking isnt an issue, accuracy is as its mainly for rendering video and 3d and online game play, and am thinking about going 64 bit windows

so if you would be so kind to give me specs on all the important stuff eg

motherboard/cpu- the best INTEL/ AMD thinking of going dual cpu or the upper level intel range

maybe this -
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology Extreme Edition

Intel® Itanium® 2 processor

or this -AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-51 Processor

ram- fastest matched cached ect ect ( here overclocking inst the issue, but pure accuracy is ) looking at 3 gig

vid card - fastest best ( thinking saphire 9800 xt here )

case and fans - need it quiet but still cool

monitor ( lcd 2 i think )

dvdrom and dvd burner (faster the better )

audio , prefer 5.1 external box type thing

network cards . as this will be the main comp in my home network giga cards 1000mb/s

router 1000 mb/s

and of course the other bits but these are the bits i need advice on

just think of your dream comp and spam those specs

thanks

what is $5000 aus convert to in US money???

anyhow, if you have no money concerns, heres what you get:
an intel p4 prescott on an abit IC7-max3
2 raptor 72gb hdds (wow)
a kickass case (your choice man, but it must have a window
a 500 watt PSU from Antec
an 8x dvd ± burner
another dvd burner (lol)
cooling system: thermaltake subzero peltier system
an ati radeon 9800xt OR a geforce fx 5950 ultra (from BFGTECH [Asylum] if possible--they give lifetime warranties on all products AND have 24/7 tech support)
an audigy 2 sound card from creative labs
a lot of blue and green fans (LED) to amazify your case

ppls did i miss anything?

anyhow, go look at the pinned topics in this forum for advice as to how to do it and where to get it from...

and ram, get as many 1024mb sticks of the same brand with the highest pcxxxx u can find, ex. pc4000 but there are higher i think, although it isnt really needed.'

and instead of the prescott i would go with athlon 64 fx since its 64bit and you said you wanted to go 64bit windows.

I have read of several cases of problems with 1 gig sticks.
The brands mentioned were Mushkin and Corsair, but that may be just because they are popular ( hence, more people trying them).

and make sure you get the biggest possible power supply........ 2x CPU + (2?) big ass HDD= LOTS of power consumption......... make sure you check this......... you dont want us to laugh bout your 3000 euro PC that dun work cause you dint spend the extra 50 bucks on the more expensive power supply........... This is what I am running and I am quite pleased with it. It is a Dell:

2.40GHz XEON/533, Dell Precision 450 Multi Oreintaion Desktop, 512 Cache
2nd Processor 2.40GHz XEON/533
1GB, 266Mhz, Double Data Rate SDRAM, NECC,2.512
ATI, Fire GL X1, 128MB, 1-2 VGA/DVI Graphics Card
250GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Pro
4X DVD+RW/+R
42X CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
Backup UPS
And lots of cool software.

You may want to get a better video card if you like, that one does the job for me.

You can coustome build it at Dell (http://www.dell.com)

Price was about $3500 USD including shipping

dont.......... i just checked it............... my computer would cost 2x as much if i go with dell (i would get a extra monitor but still, that sucks).............

u cant get the cheaper AMD, they put in 2 256MB sticks if you want 512 and more nonsense............

just get your own parts.......... if you got the cash, make it work for you, dont get a "mediocre" machine..........

its always better to build your own comp, as you wont have to deal with OEM backup partitions, their shitty reinstall cds, having to see DELL splattered everywhere you look, plus opening the case will prolly void any warranty. Plus its cheaper.......did i mention that its cheaper? :D

2 256 sticks is faster than 1 512

its not DDR. that applies to the type of stick

its dual-channel as opposed to single-channel

not necseseraily, only if the board support dual channel, and if the pairs are matched, sometime its just a money saving issue.

Why not get like 4 of the 72GB Raptors? Or 15,000RPM drives? If he has that much money..he should go for it.

As for the CPU...I duno how daul things work really..or if you can use them in a PC, but it you can HELL YAH. I bet that would raise benchmarks alot B)

If he was getting a modern PC, I'd expect it to be DDR, since thats the standard isn't it? The fact is it doesn't matter, that guy was saying that he got ripped off because they gave him 2x256 instead of 1x512, I said it was DDR...

SCSI drives are very, very costly, plus you need a controller card most of the time.

Also, that Itanium he said he might get is totally pointless, its a 64bit Workstation chip and won't support normal applications.

If you want a power PC I'd say an FX51 or a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition.
Not a current Prescott either.

I dont even know if I would get a FX processor with 20k dollars. but lets just throw some things around here,

-Several of the 15k RPM drive on Raid Striping.

-A 3400+ AMD 64 Bit CPU.
-The MSI K8T mobo for the 64 bit CPU's
-Several 512MB modules of 3500Ram (not too many 3700 Rated are supported offically with the 64bit CPUs, and I dont know too many using 3700 anyway.)
-Radeon 9800XT, dual heads I take it for the,
-Dual 21 Inch LCD Screens
-DVD burner
-Nice big case, look into those upper end thermaltakes for the kind im talking about, near full server.
-A nice 580W PSU From either Antec of Thermaltake, (I would prefer Antec)
-Mouse and keyboard of your preference.

-As for cooling, something similar to what the Mach System use, I will have to head back over tehre to get out the specifics, but indeed, high end stuff.

-And whatever else you want, but that would be my ideal system.

Oh, and one of those 1GB USB 2.0 flash drives, *drools.

If I was in his situation and had a decent computer at home..I think I would wait for BTX and PCI express..but thats just me.

how about a vapochill case

the vapochill cases are nnniiiccceee but i think you should wait until btx, pci expres and all that stuff is released like bigdawgfoxx said, otherwise you will regret it later on.

hmmm btx , well i might just not wait for that with expected bugs and all lol

but here is what i think i will be getting so far

Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP-940
nForce3 150 chipset

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-51 Processor

corsair XMS2 4300 twin matched pair x2

WD Raptor enterprise 74 gig 10,000 rpm h/d's x 2

any comments one this stuff or posible better stuff plz feel free, the time frame for this project to be up and running is like 6 weeks

if anyone can suggest an intel equilivent i would be interested

yea, hell, just wait 20 or so years and you can get a wicked fast computer (by todays standards) i just bought an ASUS P4C800-E deluxe with a P4 3.0ghz with only ONE 512 stick (i hope to get another in a few weeks). and i think this setup should last me for a couple years (at least 2)

there isnt an intel equivalent becuase thay have not yet released a 64bit chip for desktops. but if u want close performace you would have to get the best intel chip which is the 3.2ghz pentium 4 ee (extreme edition)

02-25-2004, 02:55 AM
ok the vapochill case is just a little steep at $1,100 aus , and i dont think i will ever try to overclock 60% lol so how about some suggestion on a case a little less extreem, but still with good overall cooling

the antec 550w power supply looks like the way to go too

oh and by the way thanks for everyones input so far, who said forums are just full of wingers, and spammers  :P  :P

The Nforce3 150 chipset running with PC3200 memory almost exactly matches the performance of the Intel 875 chipset running with PC4000 memory. A little bit of tweaking to use higher FSB and lower multipliers and AMD will could blow Intel off the road.

Similar to my Antec SOHO file server case as well, I like it.

Do the dragons have screwless fan mounting? That is nice.

Also delphin, I agree with you. I would get a nice kick ass computer now, and let all the new stuff come out, the bugs worked out, and the price come down over the rest of this year.

Then buy something if you want around christmas.

Oh and btw, I dont think you will really need 4300 Ram for the FX prcessor, 3700 will probably do.
