i use farenheight cuz im in america (i dont know the conversion to celsius right off) but i installed intels active monitor and as soon as i got it installed, the alarm went off and i checked and i was at 171° F, so i rebooted, and it was down a little, then went back up. i shut it down and opened the case and there was about 10 pounds of dust in the heatsink and fan, i cleaned it out an now its running at 49°C/120°F (i found out the conversion :P ). do you think i did any damage as i dont know how long its been running that hot? EDIT: i have an intel D850gb mobo, hence the use of intels' monitor software.

(i dont know the conversion to celsius right off)
divide by 2 and take away 20 :D 170/2 = 85 and take away 30 = 65. :)

Determine the temperature in Fahrenheit
Using your calculator, subtract 32
Multiply the result times 5
Divide that answer by 9
Your final answer is the temperature in Celsius

the formula is (F-32)*5/9 = C

thats the real conversion method (i found it on the net)

i still need to know if 171°F is too hot for a CPU.

171 - 77 C
did it freeze or crash at all
if not it will probably be OK

PS what is the proccessor

Thats just over 77 degrees, that is very hot for a cpu
most bios have an autoshutdown when your cpu reaches 80-85 degrees (default, you can change it)
so you were very close, I dont imagine you did a whole lot of damage, but it probably wasnt good for it to say the least.

agreed. The BIOS shuts down to hopefully prevent and major damage. You should be fine, but you should try and figure out what caused your computer to get its temperature so high :music1:

fine everyone say my way of working out C to F is bullsh!t <_< . its only a rough method anyway

yeah, that's pretty damn hot for an intel processor! u need to take the heatsink off of the motherboard and clean it really good. then clean the top of ur cpu. apply some new arctic silver on the cpu and then reapply ur heatsink. that should do ur cpu some good. btw, how many fans do u have total in ur rig? i have 6 fans total and my system operates @ around 40 C / 104 F @ idle.

i have 2 fans, one in the case and 1 on the cpu, its a p4 1.4ghz. and it never crashed, i just got worried that it may have running like that for a while without me knowing it

WHOA

This is sweet! I just changed my Multiplier to 11.5 and lowered my FSB and it WORKED! so instead of 2.2 its now at 2.09, and it didnt reset it to 1000Mhz! That means I unlocked it somehow...sweet! lol

u need to reapply the thermal grease if you reattach the cpu back to the socket, otherwise ur cpu will run even higher

Ok, it lets me change the Multi, but the number are wierd...I have it at 191X12(about 2300) and under system it only reads it as 2.1Ghz...wierd..and when I put it on 190X11 it read it as like 2.1...

Oh well,

I bumped the CPU up to 210Mhz FSB. 2300Mhz :D

Ram timings are from 2-2-2-5 to 2-3-3-8. Not bad, and running at 35 idle.

Scores on the memory bandwidth went up like 200Points both ways which is nice..and on the CPU arithmetic scores..they went up like 500Points each way...

SWEET. I will run F@H a lil and see how high the temps get..but runing great at 2.3Ghz :D

Had to up the Vcore to 1.8 or 1.82..cant remember..but w/e.

Should the graphics acutecture...or w/e its called size only be 64MB? or 128?

unlocked an intel?

stop being a fucking liar! those chips are hardlocked (in prolly all chips, the multiplier is burned onto the chip!!!

Theres a million celsius to fahrenheit converters out there and thats just one. Your cpu was 80.5 degrees.

actually it was 77.22222222222223 <_<
n00b, even after linking us to a converter, you can't use it yourself?

i read somewhere a while ago that agp apartture 128mb is the best size, some graphgics cards did better with 64mb (the lower end) and none did good with 256 so 128 was the best one for newer cards. i use 128.
