I have a high speed connection, about the same as T1, what is normal download for a connection of that speed?

Do a search on Google.
Maybe 200-300 KB/s ?

I think more like 900. I've got a good cable connection and it tests out at 1300-1900, and the bottom is a little above what the test sites show as the T1 range.

Here's one site - there are many - http://www.toast.net. I just ran a test, and my connection checked out at 1422K. It shows the T1 range as being 1078K-1300K.

A T-1's speed is 1.544 Mbps of bandwidth, although there is a varient or 2 which is the total speed for upload+download (half-duplex) and another where each one can near 1.544 Mbps (full duplex.)

Besides the upload speed of 1.544 Mbps, a GOOD cablemodem or ADSL line can be just as fast or faster for downloading than a T-1 line.

1.544 Mbps is about 150-190KB/sec bandwidth -- only compression will let that go any faster.

i have optimum online and my bandwidth is usually around 3.5 megabits a second i can usually get around 120 kb/s on http downloads sometimes in the 200-300 kb/s but varying as the download goes .

T1 is rated at 1.544Mbps downstream so (divide by 8) that's around a good solid 193 KB downloads. ADSL can often beat it, but the best of the best is OC-768 which is rated at 40Gbps!!! That's around 5 GB/s!!!

The test at toast.net arent to accurate

Try

Cable-Modem.net (http://www.cable-modem.net/features/oct99/speed.html)

Speed Test (http://tech.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp)

Speed Test (http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/)

T1 also has 1.5 mbps upload which is a big difference from cable or dsl as most if not all of them are assymetrical and have slower upload than download...

When I first got Comcast, it was symmetrical, but that didn't last long. The official story was that it was to keep people from using their machines as servers. In fact, it saves them a bunch of bandwidth. Your point is well taken. A lot of people don't realize that a two-way communication is going on in a DL, and that being capped upload drastically slows down a DL.

well my t1+ is a 1gb connection. amazing download a 4mb mp3 in 4 sec. but from kazaa takes ages like 15-20sec uasually. this ant the pc i am on at the mo. it is my uncles. but i got around there a lot.

I have Comcast cable too, and they recently doubled upload bandwidth from 128kbps (16KB/sec) to 256kbps (32KB/sec).

Comcast's network to and from the cablemodems to their internet gateway has limited bandwidth, plus the internet gateway itself (a couple OC-3's for my area) has limited bandwidth.

Assymetric bandwidth makes sense because with almost everything other than running FTP and/or p2p file sharing needs LOTS more download bandwidth than upload bandwidth.

I'd like to temporarily trade download speed for upload speed at times though, even if it's at a 10:1 or even 100:1 ratio. 1.5mbps down could be reduced to ~400kbps down and 102kbps (or even 10kbps) up and I'd almost never miss the extra bandwidth while running Kazaa Lite++.

That's interesting. I didn't know they had increased UL. I misspoke earlier when I said Comcast didn't have UL caps early on. Actually, it was the Comcast part of @Home. Even then, some parts of @Home were capping when Comcast was not. We felt sorry for them, and then, Wham!, we were capped too.

I think the best place for speed test is definatley www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com) I have found them to be the most accurate. They also have many other tools their for your broadband needs.

Oh boy....am I jealous!!! I cannot afford to get a dsl or any form of cable connection at the moment, usual reasons...no rich daddy, single parent....low income....blah blah......I think I am lucky to get 7kbps!!!!
Oh and by the way, I am also sharing over 2000 files....must have MUG tattooed on my forehead!

That connection test (DSLReports) definitely shows that Comcast has upped the UL speed. Mine was 1314/247.

I've found the most accurate speed test to be Bandwidthplace.com (http://www.bandwidthplace.com).

My connection didn't seem too wimpy until I'm hearing these "Oh yea, I've got this nice 5,625 Mbit connection, don't you? I can download a full 720 MB's in one second!" :D lol....I'm on 256 down / 128 up. <_<

my max downstream is supposed to be 768Kb/s down.

So what then should my top speed be on kazaa lite? 96Kbytes?

Yea. 768 kbits divided by 8 = 96 KiloBytes a second.

At your school there are probably a whole lot of users on the network, slowing things down a bit...

I have Cox.net the second fastest ISP according to toast.net and it's average speed is 3441 K. My download speed according to toast.net is 1493 Kb and my upload speed is 530 Kbps. Why is my speed so slow for cox?

I am using cogeco cable, a very fast isp provider.

According to their site, http://www.cogeco.ca/en/high-speed-internet-_o.html, my internet is up to 16mb/s down and up to 1mb/s up.

I've never ran tests, but when I use netants to download from fast uncapped sites I usually get 1.5mb/s down for game demos, patches, etc etc.

Whatever your speed, you would think that any download would have finished in the 3 years since this thread was started.
