This is my case.
I recently got ahold of a very old computer (166megahertz). On to this i installed windows 95. Then i went and tried to get Kazaa-Lite....After much searching i found kazaa download place and went about downloading a copy or two of KL (i couldn't get ressurection working). Now after downloading KL i tried to install....An error of some sort pops up, and i later find out that 2.4.4 needs IE4.0 or later to run. So i have been trying in vain for the last week to get ahold of an older copy of internet explorer (6.0 doesn't like win95), a task that i'm told might be impossible as microsoft no longer supports any version bar 6.0 and all the downloads of IE 5.5 or 4.0 work fine untill you try to install them, at which point in time they try to get info from microsoft, info that isn't there (This is what i'm assuming). :frusty:

So now i ask, are there any versions of Kazaa-lite that work on Windows95 without Internet Explorer. If not, could you then list me the top three P2P programs apart from Kazaa-Lite.

Thanks for reading this, the problem is driving me crazy.

Sincerely

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 07:26 AM
2.10? Where would i find a copy of that, i looked over all the different versions on this site, none that i saw fit that description. Also, could you tell me a bit about the other P2P programs.

Thanks

I looked over at the KDP site, there they say that K-lite will run on 95, but needs IE4?

kdp has no idea what they are talking about take a look at their fastrack help and you will see they are clueless, take a look at our own problem section here and you will see it in paul's old posts that 2.10 runs better on win95

here is v2.10 (http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?idlong=7d2c638d82e787184b8ed97de7be0544) but i belive you will need ie still, try it

Thanks alot for the help musleman, i really appreciate it, however, i think my biggest problem would be getting a P2P program that doesn't need internet explorer. I'm taking a look over at shareaza, but i would be keen to know what you think is the best aswell. And to reiterate, do you know of any P2P programs that don't need IE, i just can't get it to work.

Thanks heaps for you time

When trying to run the program i get an error message saying, "GETPROCADDRESS() FAILED"

If you could help me with this then i'll brand you a genius for ever more

Sorry to say it, but that is the full error message :(

GetProcAddress() failed

[There was a white cross against a red circlular background aswell, though i doubt that makes a diference, and there was the generic OK button aswell]

This is exactly what it looked like

Excuse the verbosity, i just don't want to miss ANYTHING

Hope this helps :(

shoot this happens when you try to run klite??

Whipsaw

I'm afraid so

I don't suppose you might know what it means?
Or possibly know how to solve it?

MUSLEMAN

hmm normally its a missing dll if i'm right. did you uninstall the the other version??

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 12:16 PM
Yup, as far as i know not a trace exists. The others never managed to install, so theoretically there won't be anyhting lieing around. Just to be sure i ran a search, and all that it found where files belonging to 2.10.

There were a number of old versions of Kazaa-lite at oldversions. Should i perhaps try another, or do you think the problem will presist. Also, if your right and it is a missing dll then is there anything that i can do about that, i presuming not. Finally, do you think that this error might have anything to do with incompatability, like for instance the lack of IE?

Thanks for your help

MUSLEMAN
02-27-2004, 12:33 PM
yes it might.

please uninstall klite and then go to program folder and delete any kazaa folder you see.

then give the install one more go and lets see what happens

Sorry, i gave it a try, not a trace left bar the zip file i downloaded. I also tried only installing the pieces which are reccomended, but still no luck.
Nice try though.

Any other ideas floating around in your brain

If you can't think of anything that's ok, i really appreciate the help so far.

Sincerely

lol i'm waiting, also if the install of internet explorer goes fine, then maybe you can try a newer version of klite, maybe 2.4.0, but only as a test and after 2.1.0 connected fine and ruining.

keep me posted

YEEEEAAAAAH

You genius you!!

That old version site was the first site with internet explorer that wasn't dead end. As far as i can tell microsoft has recently pulled the plug on all versions of internet explorer bar 6.0. For instance, the other link you gave me for 5.x leads to the microsoft site where you are then told that it is on "extended support", which they then explain means that they no longer offer it for download, but mod's are available. Basically, hordes of links across the web are all useless now, beleive me, i've tried a few. However, it appears that Oldversion.com does not simply mirror the microsoft site, but instead actually has the program. At least, this is the way that i understand it.

Nonetheless, i now have a copy of internet explorer 3.2 running on my pc. Unfortunatly, 2.10 still doesn't work, and 2.4.4 still asks for windows98, but, i am currently downloading some other older versions of K-Lite from oldversions.com, and crossing my fingers and pretty much every other part of my anatomy that i possible can, and some that i can't :o

I'll post back in a few minutes with the details

Thanks so much :D

Got an error message when i tried to run 2.40

"The KLCONFIGWIZARD.EXE file is
linked to missing export SHELL32.DLL:SHGetSpecialFolderPathA"

That's the exact error message

I'm busy downloading another copy of the Kazaa-Lite, another version of 2.10

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 02:30 PM
Turns out that 2.10 build 3 doesn't like me either, this time the error message reads, "A required DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found"

Busy downloading 2.0.2

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 02:34 PM
Seems 2.0.2 isn't in a friendly mood either, apparently it wants "windows version 4.1 or later"

Downloading the oldest copy available, 1.79 i think

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 02:42 PM
1.72 has issues as well. "Couldn't locate function internet autodial" it says.

What do i do now?

is this version 2.10??

Yup, version 2.1.0 build 3

Maybe i should just shoot my computer, or at least format and get a copy of 98

Is morpheus any good? A really crusty, old, buggy copy used to work on the computer. Maybe a better version might be out?

Whipsaw, the dll you where after is a VB runtime file, you may download the vb runtimes from here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/Redist/sp5/WIN98Me/EN-US/VBRun60sp5.exe)

install them, i hope that helps  . Have you build 1 of 2.10? Btw i havent read the complete topic, just bits so what version of IE do you use? As i beleive IE 4 is a minimum requirement. Is this the first edition of 95 or the second (or maybe third... i think there was three of them  )

Whipsaw
02-27-2004, 03:57 PM
Yes, i do have 2.10 (i assume it's buid 1, considering the order went 2.10, 2.10 build 2, 2.10 build 3). I'm currently using Opera, but Musleman did give me a link to IE3.02 which i have downloaded and installed succesfully. I can use Internet Explorer 3.02 as my browser if i want. I have windows 95 version B, which i assume is version 2.

Thanks for the link, it's busy downloading, i hope it's all i need, and not a internet 4.0 or later. As currently 4.0 and onwards are nearly impossible to get a hold of.

I'm afraid the file didn't work.
Thanks for the help though, i guess your right, maybe Kazaa-lite just isn't meant to work on anything less than ie4.
Could you please rate the top five P2P programs in order from best to worst.

Thanks

GetProcAddressFailed() is an error due to registry inconsistencies.

Do you have admin access on your computer?

BearShare MAY work on Win 95b -- I know it works on Win 98SE.

BitTorrent versions are very likely to work on Win 95b, and are among the fastest ways to get files.
