How do I safely replace windows defualt shell style with one that comes with a visual style? I've looked around and I can't find any help.

You could use a program like Style XP or WindowsBlinds....
I do not think style xp and windowblinds change your shell.
The most decent one I know that changes your shell with themes is Aston (http://www.astonshell.com/)
But I prefer the windows explorer shell with style xp :)

I tried Aston... but it wasn't for me.
I'm currently giving Litestep (http://www.litestep.net/) a whirl (it's a bit hard to configure), then I'm going to try Hoverdesk (http://www.hoverdesk.net/).
