Hi, i read somewhere that if you travel faster than the speed of light, you acctually go back in time? But how, once somethings happened its happened. A very weird thought!!

Oh man, this discussion can go soooooooooooo deep

If you meet your future self and he kills you, then he will never have existed that long so he did'nt kill you so how would it actually happen?

Scary

events happen in real time but by the time you see them happen they have already occured....when we look at stars we look at events that happened some time ago because of the speed of light and the distance. therefore we can see back in time so to speak but we can't make time go backwards...even though a certain us president is trying to make my country go back to the 1940s

just in case i am wrong and we can go back in time...make sure you don't take a dump before you go :o

DanB
02-28-2004, 11:41 PM
It wouldn't happen

He still be able to exist until then becasue it wouldn't be known that you would go forward in time until you did

watch the butterfly effect that movie does a good job explaining time travel and why u can't and can so does time machine love both of those movies.

Einstein or some other smart guy compared time to a river, and that time always flowed one way, but there was always the possibility of a whirlpool, which would be the water going opposite direction, and that would be the time going backwards :smilie4:
But I say no, it can't happen

bigboab
02-29-2004, 12:08 AM
I say impossible. If you take off in a space craft, how could you possibly land before you took off.

Einsteins theory of relativitiy is ok in theory. but in practice, No. Everything else is relative. So to return to where you started would be relative from when you started. So it would be at a later time. Sorry Albert.

i would go back and warn my old grandad to go to the doctors more often

mostly i would go back just for the sake of it and see what the glorious region of Newcastle looked like in the olden days :D

Though my situation is not the best I would not travel directly back in time.

Maybe I would do that as another person.

But what really would interest me, cause iti s real and sad fact to travel

to all the persecuted ppl and help them during World War 2...

But that might be quite impossible...

:(

Travelling in time is pure speculation based on some scientific facts. Its not like we can believe in it until its proven false or the other way round.

The only thing about light of speed is you cant go faster than light yet. An experiment was done in Australia similar to teleport in which they transferred photon from one jar to other. It was a success, speed of light wasnt a parameter, the even happened instanteneously. They are working now to with an atom or even a molecule. Its at least 20-30 years before any human does it.

Timetravelling might be possible, but with our current science and developement,
it is hard.

But it might be truely possible.

Imagine what would happen if you are neither in Space nor time?

You are in " ". Would that makes you feeling comfortable?

But the interesting would be be what would happen if World War 2

never happened? Would I be still there as I am? Or would I be someone else,

in my former life... All interesting questions, come on test it out...

I recently saw an interesting film - 12:01h - day repeats and only one guy

remembers... funny in some ways but horrible if one person in Africa remember

that the day repeats hundreds of times in loop and the scientist is in North America

=> Real Problem!!!!

Would this board exist if WW2 would never happened?

WW2 was important but sad very sad, but maybe you can beam all of the

persecuted ppl out on a starship and not effect timeline but only save lives???

What is " "

Space and time are two dimensions. If you are not in these two then you are in some other dimension. A dimensionless is also a dimension where there are no parameteres. From a scientific point of view, its speculation. People are working on it and until its at least closer to what time travel means, I will only regard as a joke popularized by Back to the future people

Moreover, I like Sartre's philosophy. So even if there is meaning to life or there is dimension, I wont feel unhappy or uncomfortable. I will continue to drive, drink and be happy

An even triggers event is again a movie concept. From scientific point of view its not necessary something to trigger. Causal is another philosophy but not necessarily a scientific point of view.

I must say, its so much fun to speculate, get confused and be happy thinking about all this

Btw, who knows if you will be in the same space dimension even if you travel time. You could be in a whole different earth. Keep speculating and dont bring science because then everything is absurd what we are talking

Yeah - quantum theory shon that when measuring reflections of lasers off mirros, any alternative projections occured to some degree..........further study shown that all possible events for a given for a situation but at a quantum level.

Following this theory, at the point you would die, it is always possiblt to liive for 100th of a second and so on for every 100th - just as you are about to die stays that way. We all just end up on the verge of death for eternity :(

There are many ppl who are after their death there - consisting of electromagnetical waves (energy) - and there might be disturbing

As any massive object increases in velocity, it's mass (relativistic mass) also increases. The mass increases exponentially towards infinity when the object reaches the speed of light. Of course, the object can't reach the speed of light, as the force required to accelerate a body of almost infinite mass is far too high to be supplied by us.

isn't there a light paticle called the photon ? doesnt it travel at the speed of light ? is it infinite in size ? can you turn out the light before you leave ? anyway i thought the new theory was that the speed of light was not a universal constant any more.
You're making too much sense

photons are considered both particles and waves, they are considered as particles for the purpose of calculations.

One should reconsider that Einstein didnt say directly that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. All he conveyed was like 4thgen said the mass of the body will increase drastically and its not possible as of now, to provide the force.

"However the concept of spaceships, As a ship nears the speed of light it will become noticeably more massive but so will the fuel. That means that as the ship is becoming more massive the thrust is becoming higher too, since the
exhaust is more massive (heavier particles due to denser mass from
the energy to mass conversion."

Photons can be made to travel slower than the speed of light when changes are done in the environment i.e the medium it is travelling in. Basically, if anything travels faster than the speed of light it will emit Cerenkov Radiation (http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae457.cfm).

Btw, beyond the light barrier exists particles called tachyons. So particles have already crossed light-barrier implying particles can do that. We juts dont have enough external force to make it happen to our objects yet.

What i want to know is if you were travelling at the speed of light in your car and you turned your headlights on what would happen.

Good question!

All I can think of is, wear your sunglasses

J/k very interesting question.

One speculation: If you are travelling faster than the speed of light then by the time the light will reach you, you will already be beyong that point. Also, the light from the headlight lamps wont be falling ahead on something but rather will be staying at their position and you can see them moving slowly backwards. You will obviously be much beyond it. I guess the only way to navigate would be to use radar. Your eyes wont help you here :D

Did`nt someone also do an experiment with photons which could have destoyed the world but they went ahead a did it anyway or was that particle accelerator.???

Yes I believe that was Particle Accelerator at Brookhaven's Lab. Some people even say that had something to do with junior JFK's plane crash.
Dont know the validity of that. Its buried like 16-17 feet under ground. Accelerator was used to create conditions similar at the time of Big Bang.
