A DVD drive can play DVDs/CDs. A DVD-Recorder can play and record DVDs/DVD±Rs/CDs.

If you could play DVDs on CD drives, we wouldn't need DVD drives, would we?

edit: spelling

Some people believe a DVD-ROM is the same as a DVD-recorder. They are not! DVD-ROMs cost about $30.00 while DVD-recorders start around $100.00. His question refers to a DVD-recorder ("DVDr"), which is not exclusively required to just play a movie. I hate to see him pay too much just to watch a movie. In any event, he still needs a DVD-ROM or a DVD-recorder to play the movie.

I think if he can spare the cash it would be better to buy a dvd writer(recorder). He'll be able to copy DVD movies :D

EDIT: and save money on buying dvd's. Just rent and copy them instead

tll just be better to get the recorder.
Definetly youllwant it later

If you rip the .vob files from the dvd thru someoneelses pc
and then via LAN or network send them to your pc
and then have dvd playing software (powerdvd)

then
and
only then
can you watch a dvd without a dvd player

A dvd writer is a better choice as the prices are quite low nowadays.

You can also copy the ripped movie (for a friend's pc) onto a external hard drive and transfer it to your pc.
