Getting New Athlon Xp 2500+

I plan on overclocking my new atlhon xp 2500+ Barton 166/333mhz FSB 512kb L2 Cache to a athlon xp 3200+. I am wondering what type of cooling I might need and and other stuff that can help me overclock successfully?

a 2500 can OC to a 3200 with regular fans, just have a few of them
it can also OC to 3200 w/ the stock heatsink that comes with it
all that is needed is sufficient airflow
You may wanna talk to bigdawgfox, he recently OC'ed his to a 3400 w/ stable temps and no liquid cooling
Right now mine isn't OC'ed that much, as I am in need for some new thermal paste, but when that comes mine will be at 3200 as well

i have three fans in my case one on processor i currently have, one on power supply, and one on side of the case, is that enough cooling for it?

You don't just set it at 3200 and away you go
OC a little at a time and check your temps, make sure it is stable and you dont burn out your CPU, I guess just monitor it and go up in small steps and you should be fine, just stop once your temps seem to be too high for your likings

That depends.
What are your temps now?

Ideally, you will want high twenties to low thirties at idle and under 40°C at full load before you begin to OC.
That should leave you with a margin of safety when your temps begin to rise.
Be especially wary as you up the vCore, temps will jump fast then.

When you try to determine your load temps make sure you run your stress test for at least a few hours as heat soak is a cumulative phenomonon and may not show up right away.

No. You got to get the retail one w/HSF & a 3yr warranty. The one you linked to is OEM, no HSF & only a 15-90day warranty.

Right now my temps for my oced athlon xp 1800+ are case 39 cpu 54

Is that idle or load temps?

Actually, that's high for either, but particularly worrisome if it's idle temp.
You will be pumping more heat into the case with a clocked 2500 than you are now.....

When did you measure these temps? was it just while your computer was on doing everyday tasks?

open it up and clean up some dust from inside then clean up the wires and get them out of the way and then see what your temps are, if possible add another fan or two for intake, i found that making all of my fans intake and using power supply as itake (untill i get a rooftop blowhole) brought my temps down a couple degrees.

Just open Task Manager ( control+ alt+ del) and look at the bottom of the screen...it will say "CPU Use " expressed as a percentage.
Idle is basically anything under 15-20% IMO, and over 50° at idle is way too high.
Over 50 at full load (100% cpu usage) isn't acceptable to me, but others may disagree.

A different HS might help, but I think your first move should be getting more air into and out of your case and doing it faster.
What happens to your temps when you remove your sidepanel ( please God, don't say you already have....)?

i cant get mine under 50c full load :( my motherboard is giving the wrong vcore voltage so its getting really hot, but ive managed to get it to around 44idle, 49c full load if my window is open a tiny bit, otherwise its around 47idle\52 full load.

Hey guys.

Ok, I have 2 intake fans, and 2 exhaust fans. I wish I could take a good picture..but newayz..I have my HDD in the lower area for them to go, and a fan in another HDD bay and it is points RIGHT at the CPU HSF. Then the exhaust fan takes the hot air out, giving me 47C FULL LOAD with stock HS/F and im overclocked 500Mhz.

I think you should have enough cooling...as long as the fans are decent.

When you get your 2500, keep it at stock and tell us what the idle/full load temps are.

Then, you can go from there.

Before you put your new CPU in, clean clean clean. If I was you, I would take everything out and do a thourough cleaning of it. Wire managment will help too!

how much is it changing by? if its just going by like 2 or 3 degrees over or under then its fine, if its jumpin aorund like 20c then 50c then 120c then -10c etc then ur most likely reading the wrong sensor.

That's normal. your temps are basically idle temps.

Have you any stress/burn in programs you can run?
Like Prime 95 or Folding@Home?
They will jack you up to 100% CPU use and keep you there long enough to see what your load temps are.

If you can manage your load temp then the idle will take care of itself....

I like the no nonsense text console, its less likely to interfere with the processor while you are gaming, etc etc. I know people that have experienced some lag while gaming with the graphical console, so they switched to the text one.

install it then run it from a desktop icon or start menu shortcut and it will automatically start to work if i remember correctly. go to options by right clicking the icon in teh taskbar and type in a name and find the advanced options then move the cpu usage percent bar to the far right; this will make it use 100% cpu. after about 5 or 10 minutes of running it click the icon (single click) and the sdisplay will come up telling you how many WU's it has done, make sure it as done at least 1 to know that it is working correctly and then check ur temps.

I have my athlon xp 1800+ oced with max v-core = 1.850 and fsb = 144 that program is ver slow or is there something wrong with it?
