Run disk diagnostics tools from drive manufacturer. Check their web sites. And if the drive passes the tests then format and reinstall your OS.

Some manufacturers provide lost data retrieval for a cost.

One of the Norton apps includes a "Protected" recycle bin from which you can recover files that have "gone beyond the recycle bin."

i trie dto use it on a file that the 'bin missed but found it hard to use because it changes file names and calls it loads of numbers, the only thing that stays the same is the filesize so your going to find it hard. Always back-up important things when adding anything hardware of a major software program ;) .

Spose thats not much help to you now though  .

With any of these recovery progs if it is your Windows partition it is important not to boot into windows before you recover the data. Otherwise your page file (and several log files) will probably get created on top of your missing files, then they will be lost forever.

Sorry to hear about your files, but it could be worse....the drive could be dead, too.

This is exactly why partitions are a good thing....

You dont have another hard drive you can boot using, and then just set up the 160GB drive as a slave and just view the files? and maybe burn them to CD?

ANd its a bit hard for me to understand, but I take it you had to reinstall windows because of a supposed corrupted drive? If so, why didnt you leave the current file system intact, instead of reformatting, so all your data, non windows related would still be there?

fixed it

lennon i figured that out b4 u posted it. i hooked it up to another comp, and when winXPhome on my friends comp booted, it automatically repaired the hdd

then i moved it back. lesson learned: install service pack 1!

now, vb i hope this isnt against the rules, but could some1 pm me a sig2dat link to an activation-hacked full sp1 install?
