View Full Version : Girl Who Can't Feel Pain

Rip The Jacker
03-02-2004, 06:57 AM
3 year old Gabby Gingras was born incapable of feeling pain - the rare disease prevents the nerve fibers in her body from being able to pick up and transmit pain signals.

No other cases like it have been found in the US - doctors can only find twelve instances of the disease in the entire world.

Without pain, she can't tell when she is harming herself. As a result, she currently has no teeth, and may have to have one of her eyes removed from complications caused by self injuries when she was an infant.

"She fell down the stairs the other day in the garage," her dad says. "She just picked herself up and started climbing up the stairs again like nothing had happened."

"She never cried," her mother adds.

:o

"So often we think of pain in a negative way. But it is pain, that protects us."

That sucks.. :(

A little off topic, but I saw a chick on TV who was allergic to water. She would cry and her face would break out in blisters. She is the only person ever to be diagnosed with this allergy.

Are you saying we should produce an invicible army of super men who can't feel pain and are allergic to water?

Let me look, just to be sure, though.

Okay, I was right:

Definitely: No.

Sadly such children rarely survive. Without pain there is little or no indication of illness or infection. By the time it is obvious it is usually too late. Normal cuts and infections go unnoticed, where most kids would be ensuring no one gets a nights sleep these children react as if nothing is wrong. Although it is every kids fantasy to be invincible, the reality is a endless daily chore of checking for signs of wear and tear.

Pain is unfortunately essential - although I suppose Mother Nature could have come up with a nice panel of warning lights.

My God-

Where is your empathy, you disgusting, unfeeling board members?

Now, get back to work. <_<

2 of my friends were drinking. My friend Haugen was playing with a knife and for some reason Damian stuck out his hand and said 'cut me' or something like that. ( I assume he was just joking around) Haugen did it. He immediatly took the knife and pressed down and sliced the back of Damians hand. He ended up getting a shitload of stitches and he doesn't have feeling in his middle and ring finger anymore.

:o Damn this is song weird shit. I guess being not able to feel pain would not be so bad if you stop feeling pain like when you are (insert semi-mature age here http://filesharingtalk.com/html/emoticons/whistling.gif) or something. ;) Because then you know not to do some stuff.

Well at least now I know what happend to a 3 year old when they dont feel pain. There are some times when Arm is in severe pain that I sure wish I couldnt feel pain. :)

that's impossible, because she would instantly die. Your body "HAS" to have water since the majority of it is water.

that reminds me a lil of the story of the 3 guys in greece (?)........... they were drinkin and actin macho and all (you know, beating eachother with stones and stuff like that), when one of them decided that it would be really cool 2 saw off his foot with a chainsaw.............. now this sounds pretty dumb, but his friend was even cooler................... but after cutting his own head off, it was kinda hard 4 him 2 gloat.................... lol

If the little girl cant feel pain then can she feel normal, non-painful feelings like touching an object?

Yes, there are different types of nerve fibers. Just like someone who is color blind can still see, she is just missing a certain sensory ability, not the whole package.
