How much could I overclock it with stock cooling?

bigdawgfox has his overclocked to a 3400+ which is quite amazing, mostly though people will OC to a 3200+ then stop
do you have sufficient airflow through your system? and what are your current temps?

You can technically overclock it as much as you want.

But most people I know easily overclock it to 3200+ levels, and still retain temperatures in the 50C range, with average case cooling.

As I have said before, BigDawg's Temps are umm, on the cold side. Sometimes I wonder if ASUS makes the temps lower than they are.

Speculation and Cospiricies, but perhaps im just a suspicious person.

Could be..but mine runs at 2310Mhz fine. You can get it to 2.2Ghz, which is a 400Mhz overclock with stock cooling and decent airflow, GO FOR IT!

If you buy the retail chip you get the stock heat sink and fan. That is the one bigdawg uses, yes.

just remember, bigdawg mounted an 80mm case fan on his stock heatsink. and bigdawg also has 5 other case fan keeping good airflow inside his case. so keep those in mind,

Ok thanks for your help, I think thats what I'll get cause I don't wanna pay like double the price of a 2500 for a 3200 when I can just o/c a 2500.

I've built a "virtual" pc can someone tell me if this PC would all work ok together (this is going to be the first pc I've built so sorry for the n00bish questions)

Case: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-CFWCS

CPU: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...&category=15919 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3465707945&category=15919) (some 2500's say they cannot be o/c to 3200 does anyone know how to tell if they can or cannot?

Mobo http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...&category=30137 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3465800915&category=30137)

Ram http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...&category=44938 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3464919480&category=44938)

I've already got a sutible ATI 9800 and a 120GB Hard Disk.
Can someone please quickly check these links out and see if the components will all work together sorry for being a dumb-ass I've only just kicked up the confidence to decide to build my own PC.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Yes, that should all work nicely together
You may want to get 2 sticks of 256 rather then 1 512 as your mobo supports dual channel, might speed things up a bit, but other then that, that looks pretty decent!
EDIT

Board is working aside from the floppy connector. All retail extra bits and pieces with it, please contact before hand with any questions, I can also provide more pictures.

A real bargain for those who dont need to use the onboard floppy port.
Does that bother you with the mobo though?

Great!
Thanks for your help and advice, I will then get two sticks of RAM as well.

Thanks again everyone, You've all really helped me alot today and I'm grateful. :)

Yeah, thats not the actuall mobo I'm getting just used the link as a example, I'll either get one online or a brand new one from my local computer shop.

That processor you linked on ebay didn't come with a stock HSF.

I'm from the UK (London)
Yea I know, I've found one that has http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...&category=15919 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3465402900&category=15919)

Do you know how I can tell if the CPU can overclock to 3200 or not cause some say the ones they are selling cannot, something about it being locked.

I think you should buy all the stuff new..from ebuyer or something.

My exact specs are in my sig, ASUS A7N8X for the motherboard, AMD Athlon 2500XP, and 2X256Mb Mushkin PC3200. MAKE SURE YOU GET AT LEAST PC3200!

These (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-051&depa=0) fans are 5 for $30 USDs. I dont know if you can get them in the UK, but I can highly recommend them. They are quiet and push pretty good amount of air.

Even locked... You can up the front side bus to 400 MHz and that's the setting for 3200+.

The multiplier is locked on most new Barton 2500+s but you should be able to get to 3200+ buy just raising the front side bus from 166 to 200. Like bigdawgfoxx said, just make sure you get at least PC3200 RAM.

edit: yeah, what he said :D

So far I've brought the case thats all sorted I'd like to buy everything else today just a little confused over this matter.

The mobo I'm looking at ( http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=49061 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=49061) ) says it supports 400FSB now I cannot afford the 400FSB 2500+ Barton, So can I use the 333MHz FSB barton in it what diffrence would I notice between the 400Mhz 2500 and the 333Mhz one and are they both compatible with that mobo?

it will be compatible but for sure get a motherboard that can support 400mhz fsb. when you overclock the 2500+ you just set the fsb to 200mhz (400mhz effective) and you have a 3200+ so in order to assist with the overclock having a motherboard and ram that can run at 400fsb will help a lot.

Great thats cleared it up.

My final choice

Windowed Case (w/ Built in Fan, 350w PS / I may up it at a later date)
Asus A7N8X-X
2X Kingston 256MB 400MHz DDR
Athlon 2500+ (Barton Core)

how about here (http://www.simply.co.uk/productinformation/48181/WW/AMD_ATHLON_XP_2500+_333MHZ_RETAIL_BOXED/index.htm). I clicked a link at the bottom of tigerdirect.com and it took me to this website which i am assuming is the uk tigerdirect. It is retail box which should have the heatsync in it.

arctic silver 5 is betetr in my opinion although thermal pads are a lot easier to apply. The stock heatsync will come with a thermal pad already applied. If you want to use arctic silver 5 check out the arctic silver website (http://www.arcticsilver.com) and read through the application guide a couple of times to make sure you know what you are doing.

Does my voice not get heard here?
I think I've posted this at least 5 times now.
You don't need PC3200 RAM to clock this high, you need GOOD RAM of at least PC2700 spec!.

My Mushkin PC2700 Level one easily runs synched at 200x 11.5. It has gone as high as 220 FSB.
Just this morning I was chatting with a fellow from South Africa who has Corsair PC 3200 that crashes at a FSB over 200.

There is a lesson here...
