Thi is the only post I can find about this at the moment on net:

http://www.user-group.karoo.net/

We here in Hull are kinda stuffed if we lose our accounts as the company that runs internet services in Hull has the monopoly and so a withdrawel of account means no net access.

Hello!

This is scary news! We need to now more about this!

But I seriously doubt that it can be done! How do they identify the cracked ones?

One method would be for them to make users update their Software to a new version of AutoProtect. I have actually a few weeks ago been prompted by mine NAV2004 to updade the Subscriptions services(I do not mean the actuall subscription of virus definitions I mean program components related to Autoprotect and the Automatic LiveUpdate function). I refused but so far my copy still work and hopefully it will continue to do so.

Have you guys also experienced this prompt a few weeks ago?

Did you Update your copy of NAV 2004 Professional?

Did something happen to it?

But this is a bit Scary!

Hopefully it is just scare tactics. But In worst case scenario they force people to update with some spy function built in.

I am playing safe, just sent for an OEM 2004 version (cost £18.36p), I do have a cracked one ready to install, but too risky as I do cannot afford to lose my net access as I will be unable to get an another ISP where I live.

It's OK, I paid for mine as well (like gecko, but the 2003 Norton Internet Security). It's the only piece of software on my pc that I have actually paid for!

I just never thought it would be a good idea to mess with a company that produces firewalls!

You gotta be kidding me. AVG sucks ass in my opinion.I had a good friend of mine bring his PC over to me to have a virus removed because AVg kept telling him the virus was there. It was in his Quarantine but the virus kept reproducing itself and therefor kept running even though it was in quarantine.
I have been using Norton for over three years now and have not had a virus in at least 2 years and the last one I had was one that my wife stupidly allowed to get on the computer .

Oh and for the guy who said get MacAfee, that's a joke also.I got a copy of there internet security and my damn computer would not connect to the internet while it was installed.I tried everything and could not get it to work, back to Norton I went.

I have bought Norton, because in all the years i have been using it I have had no problems with any virus getting past it.

By the way, this is the second time I have paid for this and I guess I will keep on doing so, under £ 20 a year is worth the peace of mind

I have an original copy of Norton 2003 and it gives me a whole year of free updates from when you install it.

Im sure you could edit a registry that makes it think its got 40 years of free updates lol

You should have a look at Trend's PCCillin, I've had virus's not detected my AVG,NAV or McAfee online scan that were picked up by Trends "Housecall" online scanner.

I've changed to avg and had no probs with it so far, I did have nav 2003 for a long time which worked np but NIS 2004 and N/systemworks 2004 were nothing but a ball ache for me, I've d/loaded versions from emule and bittorent and both have been dodgy, some would'nt update others would just shut down on there own :( ,when I tried going back to my old (paid4) version of nav 2003 there was nothing but problems so I scrapped anything to do with symantec and norton including all reg entries and reverted to avg and zone alarm.

There is a glitch that you can make your subscription for 30 - 100 years.
so you will never need to re-regester again. ;)

Pretty easy to explain it, but hard to do. <_<

Norton is a resource hog, but if you want to get get unlimited updates, just uninstall Norton AV, remove the Registry traces and reinstall. The damn thing just starts all over again. I did on my friends PC last year in January with NAV 2002 and it worked. He upgraded  to 2004 2 weeks later. The subscription ran out in Febuary and I uninstalled/reinstalled it and the subscription renewed.

Note: This is NAV 2002 & 2003. I can't say about the rest.

how loser can u get?

Could someone tell me why using an online scanner is "loser"?, if your scanner doesn't pick everything up, which none do, then you can double/triple check from other scanners if your system is behaving wierd. As opposed to installing multiple scanners which is a waste of time.

This one line is especially ironic considering you spend most of your life making smart-ass comments in this forum.

the online scanner is a waste of time imo. the time to load and to scan is just not worth it. Whereas I can have an av program to auto update and auto scan the system for me.

Now I dont know about you but those who complaint that the Norton AV hogs too much resources can just go out and buy yourselves a new computer or upgrades ur rams. It's not really expensive to do and that is really a lame excuse not to have an av program installed. And when you get infected you come here and cry about it.

and those losers that got caught by norton you guys can just go to hell cuz you PIRATED the program, if you want it go out and buy one, it's not expensive, but ur that poor to even buy an AV program o well....GET A FREAKIN' JOB!!!

as for your smart ass comment I'll disregard it as I dont squabble with losers on the internet. I am a professional ESL teacher and have a decent life. I dunno about u but if all u do is write smart ass comments like this all day then u really need to get a life. <_<

No ball, I have balls, but most of you will not lose your internet connection, if they detect a warez version of Norton on your PC, I on the other hand would be stuufed as unlike most of you, we only have one ISP in the city I live in fro broadband, so if my ISP bans my account, I have no net.

I think it only people like me that need to worry, for sure I cannot see how having pirated version will effect teh rest of you.

Holy crap, you are geting more ironic by the minute, ... and you just resaid what I said to you????????

PLUS my point was it doesn't matter whether you autoupdate or not, NO av will detect all viruses/trojans, by using scanners by different companies you get a wider coverage of all the viruses.
I dunno what online scanner you tried, but for me they take about 30 seconds to load. So I get active protection from my main scanner, and backup testing from online.

james_bond_rulez
03-16-2004, 12:09 PM
why the heck would you use an online scanner?

does it scan when u download email messages? no

does it scan when u download files? no

does it warn u when there are malicious codes in a webpage? no

What do u do when a virus turns ur computer into a proxy zombie sending out mass emails 24/7? get kicked out of ur isp and cry on this forum via dial up connection....

IWishAnon2609
03-16-2004, 02:26 PM
Thats what the main installed scanner is for which I said you should have as well !

The online scanners are backup's, eg: for java applets that have already been downloaded to the system which the main scanner didn't pick up.

Not good news. I guess if you get caught you can just switch to another AV program. If there haven't been many cases of Norton actually stopping people then thats o.k. I have considered the fact that Norton may just send out a "fix" in one of their updates which will render any cracked versions useless but I guess there will be a work around if it happens.

AVAST is free, and in my experience, beats NORTON by miles.
My daughter had NORTON, and I had AVAST. Norton let a virus into her system, which Avast had caught on mine. She went to avast.com and downloaded it, and has had no more problems.
Avast does automatic updates as needed (as soon as a new virus or worm is out, it seems).

I have used AVAST for a couple of years, and have never had any problems at all.
