There alot of free ones going down the drain, but I use T35 (http://www.t35.com) and they work very well. The only draw back is they only let you upload files that are certain sizes. Look through the site for more specifics.

As for software, I use Cute FTP to upload my files and PSP7 and Adobe 6.0 for my layouts.

This is only my 2 cents. Best thing to do is test things out, like programs and such. You'll find something you can work with.

well use the Macromedia (http://www.macromedia.com) pruducts family for web design.
and take a look here (http://www.freewebspace.net) for free hosting.
the ftp client is up to you

Dreamweaver is a very powerful WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor, but I don't recommend it for newbies. FrontPage blows, but you should start with that. It's best to learn HTML (and JavaScript, PHP, etc.) though, you can have the basics down in an hour.

For graphics, use GIMP, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, 3DStudio Max, Lightwave, or Xara3D.

Well the thing with free webhosting is basically you're gonna have to make sure that you don't have a popular site.

MOST free sites limit you on bandwidth to an extreme. 1amd1 are nothing but mofoing communists who you have to beg to change even dns settings. Besides they only give you 5 megs of bandwidth on the free side of it. I enjoyed them for a month, then my bandwidth shot to 12 megs.

So in reality, if you think you are going to have a popular site, then it's best to look around for a paid hosting service that is within reason price-wise.

For a code editor I started on Dreamweaver and will most likely die with it. It's "available" everywhere.

I don't really care for a FTP program..they all do the same. It's easier for me to just use the FTP side of my browser than it is to deal with the hassle of another program.

Although a lot of my friends swear by Seagull FTP (http://www.seagullsoftware.com/products/free_ftp.html).

LeechFTP is open-source and kicks ass with features like multiple threading and down- / upload acceleration! And it's open-source!
