View Full Version : Advice On New Graphics Card

Okay, here's the deal - I bought Deus Ex: Invisible War yesterday and it seems like my GeForce 4 MX 440 isn't up to scratch for it :(

Am I going to take it back? F*** no - I'm just going to buy a compatible graphics card for it :D

I've got around 60-80 to spend, but at a pinch it could go up to 110-130. Below are the chipsets that are compatible - The question is what's the best card to get with that budget, and where can I get it at its cheapest? :)

COMPATIBLE CHIPSETS
ATI Radeon 8500
ATI Radeon 9 Series (9000, 9200, 9600, 9800)
nVidia GeForce 3 Ti Series (No MX supported)
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti Series (No MX supported )
GeForce FX Series

Graphics card must support Pixel Shader

I'd personally recommend the R9600XT because its cheap (depending on where you live) and it delivers great performance for its price.

If you havent already noticed bigdawg made an awesome graphic card guide (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=99637), so read that and then tell us your status

I'm looking at new graphics cards at the moment, and I'm on a similar budget, maybe a bit lower than yours. Bookmarked so far are...

Mediamax/PowerColor Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB DDR ATI TV-Out DVI-I Retail Box (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=59147)
Nice and cheap at £76, but not quite true 9600 Pro speeds.

Gigabyte Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB AGP VO (http://www.dabs.com/uk/productView.htm?quicklinx=30D5)
Pretty nice for £100

GeXCube Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR AGP DVI VO (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/graphicscards/productView.htm?quicklinx=30RQ)
Also £100, but again not true XT speeds and I've never heard of the brand.

Abit GF FX5700 Ultra 128MB DDR AGP D/VO (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/graphicscards/productView.htm?quicklinx=30RC)
£94, just to throw a Nvidia in there.

Asus ATI Radeon 9600XT/TVD 128MB & Half Life 2 Bundle - Retail (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/asus_ati_graphics_cards.html)
Bit pricey for me at £127, but nice card and Half Life voucher too.

Hightech ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB AGP x8 Platinum Retail Box with Half Life 2 Voucher (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=58177)
Nice card again, £122.

Not much advice, but maybe some suggestions for you. Let us know what you choose and how it performs, cos I won't be getting mine for about a month yet.

edit: Oh, and if you or anyone else finds something nice between that £76 and £100 mark, it would be nice to see.

If you can, wait for the new cards from nVIDIA and ATI.

1) They may offer a new budget card :)

2) The new cards are going to ram down the prices of the current cards :)

My two cents, expect a 1-2 month wait though :(

The HIS 9600XT is supposed to be the best 9600XT going.

If you don't need VIVO or DVI, you can save (quite a lot of) money by avoiding cards with those features.

No point in buying features you aren't going to use when you could spend the same money on a higher spec gpu.

that's what I have, and i love it!
500 core clock speed, very nice to look at, w/ blue led heatsink and fan
ram heatsinks on both sides of the card, VIVO, Svideo, the works
performs very well, and stays quite cool as well

In a way, it's a good thing.

The alternative - People move away from buying stock with crap parts and start buying the parts seperately in order to build them. Large PC retailers like PC World go out of business due to their lucrative stock PC market collapsing (good thing), and people go into the parts market instead. As a result, prices in the parts market start to inflate instead :(

Course it isn't that good if you end up with a stock yourself :( But it is something to think about that those people who end up buying s**t are keeping the prices down for the rest of us ;)

Back to the point - Thanks for the help guys :) Going to start looking properly at this when my IT coursework's handed in on Wednesday :) In the meantime, I've been seeing mid-high end GFXs going on auctions for as low as £20-£40. Can anyone comment on the reliability of using eBay?

Skillian
03-16-2004, 05:43 PM
Reliability really depends on the seller. Check out their feedback for an idea, but there's always some risk.

Only 3 1/2 hours to go, currently at £94.

*NEW* ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/128MB Samsung Chip RAM NoRe (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2794247558&category=27387)

I wish I had some money now, for that price I'd definitely risk it.

Just for ideas, I've been having a look in my past issues of PC Gamer - Not exactly the best source for finding the best hardware (but not the worst either :P), but there's one card that seems to stand out

PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 128Mb (http://www.pny-europe.com/de/verto_fx_5200_agp.asp)

Glowing review from PCG UK and a few other review sites, citing it's level of performance similar to the mid-high range of the previous GeForce4 cards, it's performance again ATI's equivalents (Radeon 9000 and 9200). Not as good to be expected to run HL2 or Doom 3 at maximum (well this is a budget card :P) but supposedly great surface for the price.

Originally reviewed in August at about £85 - Still remains the favourite budget card it seems, but time has taken it down to less than £60. Should be able to get it at around the 40-50 quid mark B)

Of course, it is a bit old :S Anyone got a better suggestion per chance? :)

The FX200 doesn't have a good reputation. I don't even think it would really be able to run Deus Ex: Invisible War.

OFF-TOPIC
======================
Look - If we in Softwareworld can deal with god knows how many "Which browser?", "Which download manager?" etc, you guys can deal with a "Which GFX card?" every now & then

Seriously though - Yep, I saw the guide before I started the topic :) It's pretty good - A decent amount of information collected into one topic. But it's still a bit confusing as on face value there's no way to distinguish cards apart, and it doesn't take into account the fact that manufacturers create the cards fairly differently from each other.

This topic was pretty much a case of "what level am I looking at (in terms of both cash and ability to play DX:IW)?", "what manufacturer looks to be the best to produce it (this can vary per card ;)), and "what's the lowest price anyone's seen it at?" :) If it's ended up the same as the other "which GFX" topics, I apologise - But I did try to vary it by saying what I needed it for (i.e. the ability to play DXIW):smilie4:

If it's still not allowed then fine - VB, feel free to close the topic :) But ati, you ain't a mod so don't act like it (I've already learnt that lesson ;)). If you're going to report, then just report and don't say it like a brag ;)
======================
BACK ON-TOPIC

I've been having a look at the 5500 and it's got some decent reviews - But I can't find an online store for it anywhere  Got a site that sells them ati? I need to check its price compared to FX5200s

Nope - I'm just waiting for you and Rocco to cool it down or take the argument to its own thread :P

Seriously, it looks like there was/is an FX5500 chipset but the fact that it's omitted from nVidia's list is a bad omen IMO - Most likely the chipset was created but has since been discontinued (which would show why some sites show it but most don't at all). Either way, I ain't gonna risk it :(

Which means that the main choice is still PNY's Verto GeForce FX 5200. Any others that could be [more/just as] suitable? (Feel free to recommend cards with price tags going towards £40 above the Verto's price if you guys want :))

Though I have to admit that the thread has been mainly about the nVidia GeForce FX (not that I'm complaining, being an nVidia fan and all :P), but it's always worth looking what else is available :). I'm going to have a look at the ATI equivalents - Anyone got any recommendations on the ATI front?

Probably won't come?

Yep, S-Video is the same as S-VHS. Plug looks like this: http://www.parallab.uib.no/SGI_bookshelves/SGI_Admin/books/POnyx_Desk_OG/sgi_html/figures/Svideo.pinouts.gif

ATI equivelent to Nvidia is 9200 i think. you could take a look at them.

Next step up (other than the discontinued 9500 and posibly discontinued 5500) are the FX5600 and the radeon 9600. id take a look at these cards too see if they are in your price range, but over here in canada the price of a 5600 or 9600 and a lot higher than the 5200 and 9200 are.

Have fun boys, Drivers Ed is hell, I remember the days...
For me, it was 3 9 hour days of pure hell lol
you just sit there and listen to some idiot telling you it's bad to go off the road, well no shit! I didn't really learn anything....
but I passed my actual test quite easily, because the driving time they give you (i got 8 hours) was actually good and you learned stuff
so I only lost 7 points on my test, when you have to lose 45 to fail! :o
but yeah, drivers ed really sucks, but you end up saving a lot of money on insurance, so it's worth it
and yeah get your parents to call in for you bigdawg, they usually take adults more seriously anyway

ur in canada right kai?

here (canada) we do a writing test and then we have a g1 license which means we can drive with someone who has had a full license for more than 4 years. we attend driving school while we have the G1 and then go do ou r G2 test after 8 months. amd then we get our final test 8 months after that.

what is ur system like bigdawg?

:o that's a lot more complicated then our system, and i'm from canada as well! i'm from NS
in NS, you write your beginners test and you take drivers ed, then you wait 3 months and take your full test, then you have your "newly classed" drivers license, where you cans till drive by yourself, but theres rules, like you have to be off the roads by midnight, then you wait 2 years and you don't have to do a test or course or anything, you just get your actual full licence

We did watch one pretty sweet movie though, it was just a bunch of car accidents that were supposed to make us scared, on guy got his severed and it was laying in the road
some people had to leave the room, i found it quite funny!

meh i doubt it, half the shit they taech you would make you a terrible driver
like they say you should be looking in your rearview mirror every 5-8 seconds!
If you actually did that it would be taking your concentration away from the road, thus increasing the chances of an accident by a lot
I check my mirrors often, but every 5-8 seconds is overkill by far
