Your best bets on newsgroups are:

alt.binaries.cdimage
alt.binaries.games
alt.binaries.cores

Look at www.nfonews.com for updated Newsgroups posts, they're not there yet though.

As for IRC, all I can reccomend is keeping your eyes open on sites like www.ircspy.com
