Boot the XP CD and delete existing partition(s) and create new one(s). Then format using NTFS.

Those tools are built-in to the XP installer.

try using FAT32 instead of NTFS, or vice-versa, ive had problems like that with my old computers hard drive, but i always end up converting to NTFS after its finished installing.

Can you tell us what the error code is? it might be able to help us find whats worng.

try installing again using the oposite file system you used last time (unless u already tried both) and if you still get the error you have to tell us what it says.

Try using a win98 start up disk first. Run fdisk. Then reboot with winxp cd and you should be set to start formatting.

you run fdisk by typing in fdisk at the command prompt. then delete all partitions and recreate them then restart and format and put in xp cd again or 98 cd and try to install.

Has that Windows XP CD been sucessfully used before or is it the first attempt?

Perhaps the CD is corrupt?

try a ram test.Bad ram will almost always screw up your operating system install.I have had the same problems in the past.
Here (http://www.memtest86.com/) is a link for a ram tester.

go into BIOS and make sure the hard drive is being detected and also that the settings for cylinders, heads etc. are set to the values printed on teh label of your hard drive.

you just have one drive with one partition right? at the partition slection screen press d on your partition to delete it and confirm then press c to create a new partition at the selection screen and create a partition using full size, then slect the partition to install on. it will ask if you want to format it, select format using NTFS file system (or fat32 if you prefer it, if u dont know what either of these are i recomend u use FAT32 becuase it is easier to format later on). setup will now begin after it has formatted.

Where in bios is it located? it is found usually under standard chipset features.

Did you try the ram test I said you should try? Bad ram will make it impossible to install XP,windows 98 may install but XP will not if the ram is bad.You shoudl really give it a try before formatting that thing 10 times,it might just save you some time.
