Newsgroups should give you a constant 90% or more of your rated connection speed. I've got 512k adsl and get 465k constantly most of the time. As with muchspl2, I use newsbin pro :)

I used GrabIt! once, a long time ago. Found the interface to be pretty poor in relation to newsbin...you might want to give it a shot to find your favourite client though...

Take a look here (http://www.help4newbies.fsnet.co.uk/) for some more advice :)

I use Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird). And since the downoads are coming directly from your ISP, you'll max your connection every time.

I started using newsgroups to download binaries today and I must say its f'n great!
I tried it first with my ISP's newserver but its got a crap rentetion (how long posts/binaries are stored on the server) then I started searching for paid news servers. I'm now using http://www.free-newsservers.com/ (http://www.free-newsservers.com/signup.asp) as my provider on a 6 gig per month account which costs $7 or £3.83.
The average speed I'm getting on my 512/256 connection is 43.8k/Bs according to DUmeter peaking at 58k/Bs (which is my max d/l speed)
The reader I'm using is Xnews (http://xnews.newsguy.com/) and is freeware and a tutorial can be found here. (http://www.help4newbies.fsnet.co.uk/xnews_page_1.htm) According to some guide xnews is hard to use but I had no probs with it.
Before you decide to start using newsgroups try searching in http://www.newzbin.com/ for things of interest.

The best thing about newsgroups is you're not filesharing as such. Your just downloading so your ISP cant complain to loudly about excess bandwidth use.

Have fun.

As for attempting to tackle your problem regarding the fact of being a "n00b" when dealing with newsgroups, then consult this page:
http://slyck.com/ng.php

However, Forte Agent has been renoun for being the best newsgroups client available. After officially announcing discontinuation, Forte have resumed development of Agent. Forget Free Agent - it's crap, just download Free Agent and register it. ;)
