title says it all. would an 80mm at 7v blow just as much air as a 60mm at 12v?

i might make one of those 80mm to 60mm adaptors and run an 80mm fan at 7v to make my computer quiete but i cant afford to have my temps go up any higher than the are! and can somebody also tell me how to make an 80mm-to-60mm adaptor?

edit: the 80mm would be a lot quieter right?

Depends on which 80mm fan and which 60mm fan......

The 60mm fans found on stock AMD coolers run at around 4800 RPM.

The 80mm fans usually run around 2600 RPM and even much slower at 7 volts.

So...

The 60mm will move more because of the speed but it's noisy.

if the 80mm was at 12v it would probably still be quieter and would then move more air than 60mm right? or atleast the same amount of air?

That's right. That's exactly how my CPU is cooled now.

alright ill do that then.

were you the one that had the guide to make an 80mm-to-60mm adaptor? if so can you tell me how? or if not can somebody tell me who did.

Yes, I was the one who made the Fan adaptor building guide.

Here's a link to the thread. Some of the pictures seem to be gone. I'll see if I can find copies of the pics and fix it.

Edit: I found copies of the pics and uploaded them and edited the original post. :)

thanks VB, ill get some sheet metal from school next week, but im not sure where im gonna get some snips from. might actually have to buy them :(

If you have to buy snips then I think it would be cheaper to buy a fan adaptor ready made.

oh, maybe my dad might be able to borrow some from a neighbor. we'll see.

quick question: how did you cut teh middle hole? did u use a holesaw, or somehow with the snips or what?

A holesaw works best. I have made many of these fan adaptors and the first ones were cut with a fine tooth jigsaw but I now have a holesaw and it works way better.

Just put the sheetmetal into a flat scrap wood and screw it in place using to holes where the fan mounts then cut with the holesaw.

alright that i will do at school because they have holesaw's there. i hope they have a 77mm one :smilie4:

A 3 inch holesaw is 76mm. :)

Even a 80mm holesaw would still work fine.

I have put an 80mm fan on my heatsink..you say the 60mm blows more..how can I make the 80mm fan 12 volt so that it will blow more?

it probably is already.

the red wire should be going into the yellow one on the molex and black to the black. for 7v it is red fan to yellowmolex and blackfan to red molex. 5v is red fan to red molex, black fan to black molex.

Its plugged into the mobo lol

then it is running at 12v for sure, if u want to make it slower though you can cut teh wires and somehow attah them to the molex.

edit: dont do this for a cpu fan, its deadly  (copying VB lol)

Don't slow it down with the 7 volt trick for the CPU.

Starting a fan at lower than rated voltage can sometimes cause the fan to not start (sticks a little). That is deadly for a CPU.

If you really want it to turn slower then find a fan that has a slower speed without lowering the voltage.

no its fine..i was just making sure its running at full speed...maybe 20volts would be even better? haha

VB, I assume you have the fan blowing onto the cpu, rather than sucking air from it right?

Right. Why do you ask?

Just wondering really. I had heard some people have had good results with reversing the flow of the fan, though that doesn't really have anything to do with the size of it.

Virtualbody1234

I have tried reversing it. It results in higher temps so not good.

well just wanted to say that I tried making one of those adaptor things out of metal today at school but it was too hard too draw properly onto metal and the school doesnt have a holesaw either so I couldnt cut the middle hole.

Today after school I made a simple one out of cardboard and it seems to be working okay but im having a ew problems with fitting it onto my heatsync, ill show some pictures (drawn in paint  ) so u can see what is wrong...

http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/fanthing1.JPG
This is what my heatsync looks like. It is not the stock heatsync. (green fan is stock though)

okay, you see how the flaps at the side stick up on the sides of that green fan? well when I attach the adaptor thing it is on such an angle that it doesnt rest on the fins of the heatsync; heres a pic of what it looks like.
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/fanthing4.JPG

the brown is the cardboard, and the black is the fan. silver is obviously the heatsync.

so the edges never touch the fins, and its kinda loose fitting, but it stays hanging on.

the temps are up to like 50 right now, Im not sure if it is because it isnt sitting on the heatsync properly or if its something else, but all i know is that MY SYSTEM IS QUIET FINALLY! :D i havent had a quiet computer for like over a year.

now here is what my stock heatsync is like:

http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/fanthing3.JPG
first of all the heatsync is only about 4cm tall. and the fins are really really close together and small. now i know that small fins are good, but they arent when they are so close together, and the air cant circulate very easily. not to mention how easily the dust builds up. I usually got temps around 50c idle using that heatsync with arctic silver 5. with the new one im using i get around 45c idle using arctic silver 5 also.

firstly (? lol) do you guys think I will be able to fit this (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=612727&sku=C250-3614) onto my heatsync that has the flaps on the side? i might be able to bend the sides, they arent too too strong. or i could use the other heatsync if i have too, and maybe ill do something to make the air get through better and reduce dust?

i dont know whats your guys opinions?

edit: sorry about teh long post guys...

Yeah, I would think the orange one would fit, as it does not slope out like the homade one does..you could just cut slits in the cardboard so that it would slide onto the HS

hmm, i might try that. you sure the bought one doesnt slope out? it says its only 27mm so if anything i would think it would actually slope MORE that mine does. (mine is 35mm)

No...it slopes of course...the it doesnt slope from the VERY bottom of it up..theres some space where its almost straight up and down which might be enough to have it clear the side..see what im saying? \ / see that slopes from the VERY bottom up, at one angle..the orange one is different

oh, ok, I see now. the picture doesnt show that very well...but you have one so you would know and i beleive you, thanks.
