Try a tweaking program like TweakUI or X-setup etc.

usualy when it does that there is an indication that a problem exists on your hd , maybe defrag and see if it comes up with errors , poss a fault or bad sector on your drive

Running norton diskdoctor ? Doing a full scan and fix errors causes that, if you set it up that way on startup. With me its because windows didn't shut down properly.

In DOS prompt, type:
CHKNTFS with the command X to exclude a specific drive.
If you are lost, try this:
CHKNTFS/? for more info.

I run norton diskdoctor once a week you can change the 10 second delay that way too. Mine's set to chkntfs 2 seconds. Silly tweak but what the heck :)

If you do not want to check the drive anymore at boot time.
chkntfs/x C:\

btw: I don't recommend you use this command, because windows ony checks your drive if the drive have problems, lost data, or corrupted files, so it's usefull. Anyways, you can diable it at your very own risk.

Yeah, same here. I only get it when I accidently turn off my surge protector or something. Not at every single boot-up.

its a glitch with XP that comes up sometimes...ive had that one a few times.

is ur hard disk formatted in fat32 or NTFS??? if it is fat32 i recomend u convert it to NTFS because with NTFS when u improperly shutdown it doesnt ahve to run checkdisk, so here is how to convert:

click start>run>tpye 'cmd'>now type 'convert X: /fs:ntfs' (change X to whatever drive letter u need to convert)

example: if I wanted to convert my C: drive (with operating system) i would type convert C: /fs:ntfs then press enter, and it will then ask if you're sure and say you will need to restart to convert.

do this to all drives and partitions.

Open my computer, right click on the c drive, properties, tools, error checking - check now, check both automatic fix file and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click start, go make a coffee and watch.

Second thought leave it on all nite if you have too and go to bed I sat in front of mine for two hours watching it fix error's but it worked for me . Or you can repave your harddrive and try again but it sounds like you have a problem, Registry or disk corrupption.? Harddrive failing ? Its what I would try . Just my opion tho

try going to control panel>scheduled tasks and see if there are any there that relate.

I suppose it's good. I have NTFS and I love that it never has to scan... :)

you could try turning off scheduled tasks, in the scheduled tasks folder click on Advanced and stop using scheduled tasks. but it doesn't sound like its actually a scheduled task, it sounds like some program of part of xp is having problems and is setting up a 'scan disk on next reboot'
googled it quickly and found this which had 2 suggestions, virus or some kind of bug:
http://www.resellerratings.com/forum/t102902.html

Also if you have any kind of program running in the background for fixing your computer eg that Norton doctor thing. The settings for that might be worth looking into.

Sorry 3223, This is sounding more & more like a virus or trojan or severe registry problems.

u could try backing up everything, and then switching to ntfs. join the club of ntfs users, no more scanning, and better security and reliablilty with ntfs file systems

Ya I know its not something I readily advise but if you read the whole post he does have a problem, some where. Just a suggestion Its what I would do after scanning for a virus , running spybot and regseeker .But I keep all my backups so its just time involved . What would you recomend he do?
