Who said the new Seagate drives were silent?

I've just got one (80 GB SATA) and compared to my WD it rattles like a rock in an old tin can.

Now I've got to investigate more rubber mountings.

Fast as fuck though, and even without a disk cooler it is almost as cool as the WD. Proper cooling coming when I add 2 case fans immediately in front of the drive, which will be as soon as I've wired them to a molex.

My WD 250GB 8MB cache S-ATA drive isn't any noisier than my P-ATA drives (one WD, one Seagate). It does run 3-4 degrees warmer though...

Sustained transfer rates on my SATA drive are over 50% up on my older WD drive.

But I think I've found out why they are noisier. Older Seagate Barracuda's had Acoustic Management built in. The result was that the drive was quiter but slower. With performance being so important these days (usually the main reason for choosing SATA), Acoustic Management is not supported.

The noise I'm hearing is seek noise, which may be being transmitted through the case. I think I've got a possible solution though - large diameter heatsink tubing should cut down to give a very thin rubber strip. I'll try it and report back.

Decided to fit a cooling fan at the same time.

It works.

I now seem to have a silent drive, or at the very least I can't hear the seek noise now. :D

And only 15 mins Folding time lost. :P

Edit:typo
