hi, when i open a folder, on the left hand side of the opened folder is a column which allows me to perform certain tasks, this never used to be displayed before and i would like to know how to get rid of it

Open explorer
goto-tools-folder options-mark:use windows classic folders
then goto View-apply to all folders-ok

to be sure open a folder by itself and do the same.

is there a way i can make all my folders be viewed in with 'icons' and not tiles etc

At the folder options mate .>view >apply to all folders.
