I am applying for this job as a translator and they want to know how much I want to earn per 1000 words translated.

Does anyone have an idea what would be reasonable?

how long is 1000 words in time? try and work out the wage as per hour

if that doesn't help, take your birthday divide its date by 3 and take away 5, state this number in your application

It all depends on the text. Something between 2-3 hours I suppose. But I just don't know what would be a reasonable wage for a translator

There are standard prices per word.

also depends on your proffesionality, experience etc

my mom used to do it but itll be totally out of date now
Google?

Maybe look at job offers\wanteds translators - prices could be there.

(but i from what ive seen of your writing-you should ask 1 dllr per Letter) ;)

As a general indication, most translators translate in the region of 2000 words a day.

Source (http://www.langcent.arts.gla.ac.uk/Commercial/trans.html)

Here (http://www.24hourtranslations.co.uk/german.htm)is a site with prices for English to German translation.

Where the reader is unknown or the document is for general public use it is often only considered ethical to translate into your native language, unless your skills the other way are exceptional.

I think it is ok if the person asking for the translation understands the potential idiomatic problems, but possibly this should be reflected in a lower price.

Yah, I found that website too lynx. Apparently $90 for 1000 words isn't uncommon. But I don't have any real experience so I just put £40 / 1000 words.

EDIT: Can someone please kick my ass and tell me to call Mrs Taylor. I'm having a an attack of low self esteem :fear:

Skweeky, ;)

Rule number one for the independent business person (and the rest of us) is: Never underestimate your worth. If you are being unreasonable the client can either tell you and negotiate or they can go elsewhere.

My grandfather was a general contractor. I worked some summers for him during high school years. He wanted to teach me some business skills. Where did he start? Well with rule number one, of course.

You don't have any experience? Girl you've been speaking several languages for how many years? If $90/1000 words is not unusual, then you obviously deserve it too.

I don't know who this short person attacking you is but kick his ass. Now get on the phone and call Mrs. Taylor.

Well yeah, but I don't have any real translator/interpretor skills and what I was applying for wasn't for private purposes, it was for a company and that always pays less.

Mrs Taylor is for another job though, as the translation thing is freelance. I'm going to call her tomorrow because I just spent the last hour running to the bathroom ( I think I ate sth wrong :'() and it's afer 5 PM now.

I got the results from this career test I did too. Among others they suggested applying for an ATC training  I wonder if they have genocide plans
Although I'm sure Marc would love having me as a trainee

Skweeky-

OMC was right on the money; you could underbid that slightly and assuage yourself that you are perhaps a particularly low-overhead operation, but he speaks the truth-if you underbid, and your talent holds up (as it should, yes?), then how do you get your due?

Believe me, the ones pulling down 90 aren't short on jobs, and good accurate work is at a premium.

My younger sister graduated as a court-recorder, and found her way into a very specialized branch of the profession, one where she literally practices at the cutting edge of extant technology.

She is one of the very best-paid in her field as a consequence.

Go for it!! :)

Well $90 is about £55. I filled in £40...Oh well, I sent it now anyway. £40 still is good money for 2-3 hours of work

If apply somewhere else I'll ask more :D

I still can't believe they suggested taking an ATC training course

At new exchange rates between GBP and Dollar, Skweeky will get around $20 an hour...not bad really, but if you can get more girl...then go for it! Next time you will have experience and so the price could legitimately go up anyway!

Good luck

You will have to move the traffic control tower another foot back from the runway. Unless squeeky could do her job facing the other way.

How many languages do you speak and which ones?

Soon I have to decide what language I would like to learn next term. ;)

Skweeky
03-23-2004, 09:15 PM
I speak 4 languages. Dutch, English, French and German.

Sparkle1984
03-23-2004, 09:20 PM
You must be very clever to know all those languages. :D
For the last few years I've been learning French, which is my favourite foreign language, but for 2 years when I was younger I learnt German, but found it difficult so I chose another subject instead.

So next term I think I might try Beginners Spanish. :)

Skweeky
03-23-2004, 09:23 PM
Sparkle, in Belgium is it normal for everyone to speak Dutch and French. German is an option at school.
I'd definitely go for Spanish, very useful these days.
