I have my A-level music performance exams next thursday (i think) and I need to perform three pieces; 2 solo pieces and one ensemble (for the uncultured, that means group ;) )

I have the ensemble piece sorted, but I need another piece for solo. It needs to be about four minutes long and for the guitar (It can be accompanied by singing or keys etc) Any suggestions for a piece to play? :)

P.S nothing too hard, i have to be able to play it well by next week ;)

Maybe if you compose your own piece - youll get better marks....?
plus you can perform it anyway you want cause you wrote it.

Nope, it's marked solely on performance AND i'm too busy composing my own stuff for the coursework to write a piece for my exam ;)

Copy a already piece? I'm assuming you mean play a piece already written, and yes, that's what I intend on doing.

I need to think practically here....I need to be able to find an accurate copy of the sheet music/TAB for it or be able to notate it myself (which I don't have the time to do, I'm too busy to sit and do that, I'm doing coursework stuff as I'm typing :01: )

I also think it would be easier if I was familiar with the piece ;)

There is a program called "Sibelius"

which converts music into a sheet

I've got that, I also have guitar studio which was free, that's a great program for notating tab, it also converts tab into sheet

What style are you looking for? Whats your rough ability? TAB or sheet?

Something preferrably acoustic (My electric is broken atm), maybe an actual song (I can get more marks for singing, I also have a deep voice so nothing really high). I've been playing a few years and TAB please :)

EDIT: I can also get away with an easier piece if I sing :D Something which uses both picked and strummed rythyms would be good - shows able to do both well. ;)

Guns n' Roses - One in a million....you might want to edit one bit where Axl goes a little racist though....

Easy to play powerchords, good to sing, great song. Not too complex.

I don't know that one (not a big guns n roses fan ;) ) but I shall check it out :)

The good thing is, they wont know it either. You can improvise some bits to make it flashy.....pick out some of the notes, maybe even a little tasteful acoustic solo on a minor pentatonic. Its very easy to breakdown as well and take it up a few frets to show off your funky rhythm double stops.

B)

EDIT: Oh and by the way, on the record Axl sings it high, but it sounds great deep as well so dont be put off :P

Thanks :D

(may need to edit out the po-lice and niggers bit, avoid some controversy ;) )

I'd be inclined to go for something like Street Spirit by Radiohead (http://www.guitartabs.cc/fetchurl.php?filename=/r/radiohead/street_spirit.crd) or Hotel California (http://www.guitartabs.cc/fetchurl.php?filename=/e/eagles/hotel_california_acoustic_easy_but_affective.tab) , both really easy but sound good.

Indeed, may lose you a few marks

Glad you like it, as I say, play around with it, adapt it, and make it your own :)

Bo-

If you're up to it, how about something like Classical Gas?

It sounds fine unaccompanied, and it would seem to lend itself to simplification, if needed.

Mason Williams wrote it. ;)

I was thinking of that exact same song or you're crazy acoustic version (also g n' r). :music1:

As for changing one in a millions lyrics you could try

"Police and muggers, that's right//get outta my way.
Dont need to buy none of your gold chains today."

It would make sense still and remove the naughties.

Edit: I just listened to it and forgot about the "Immigrants and faggots" and "mini Iran" (I think thats what he sings) Maybe "forigeners and tourists"?
IMO music is an expression of oneself so why not sing the original lyrics? You could say you were trying to recreate Axl's attitude when he wrote it.

Yup, and he says they "spread some fucking disease".

Very un-pc and I dont agree with the sentiment, but for pure balls out attitude you have to hand it to him.

One of my favorite GnR tracks.

Although Mason Williams wrote it, countless others have recorded it; Eric Clapton, Charlie Byrd, and more.

It's not quite a four-minute piece, but it's dynamism would, I think, carry the day.

People like to hear that tune; those who've never heard it generally stop in their tracks to listen. ;)

R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts

Invloves both picking and strumming, should be quite easy (both to sing and to play) but the middle section has some more challenging chords. It would be really easy to get extra brownie points by adapting it to be completely acoustic.

Also Jon Bon Jovi's "August 7, 4:15" (the acoustic version not the studio one) would be a good one, you can do that one as simply or as technically as you like. It also involves both picking and strumming.
Don't knock it just because it's a JBJ song, it's not his usual fare.

I have both songs available for download on soulseek... for tabs, Google is undoubtedly your friend.
