Digital Camera's Compact Flash

This question is probably an easy :rolleyes: one but:

What difference does the speed of the compact flash card make to a digital camera? Is it just for when you download to your comp.?

Also what size card would you recommend to a digital camera "newbie"?
Is 128mb enough for normal use etc. on a 4mb camera?

Not sure about speed, but on a 3 megapixel camera, full quality pictures are usually around 500kBs per photo tops.

So thats 1000kB in a megabyte:

128 x 1000 = 128,000

Then divide it by 500kBs, about 256 full quality photos I think, from a 128mb flash card.

But I was wondering about the Actual speed of the Flash card?
because you can get them, for example, x8 or x20 so I was just wondering what difference the faster one actually makes?

for example if you take a picture with the camera usually on a digital camera teh screen goes blank for a few seconds, i think this is it writing to the flash card. if you have a faster one this time will be decreased. (its not a very long wait but if you are trying to do really quick snapshots you would need it to be quick.

another example for reading is when you are copying all of the files to your computer, this time might be decreased by a little although im not sure just how long it takes to copy the files anyway...
