You are more likely to catch STDs with foreskin.

Edit - It prelongs exposure to them because they stay inside and seep into the less dense skin. Sorry bit late at night for this kind of info.

On the other hand...

Its supposed to be there to protect the end,

Circumcision roughens the end resulting in much less sensitivity,

If properly cared for a foreskin is no big deal (if you get an STD, you get an STD, it might help to spot it earlier (no pun intended) so reducing the chances of permanent sterility)

It is more of a cultural phenomena than a necessity.

I have a son, he is fine, he washes.

The UK does not make a habit of circumcision for cosmetic reasons, but only for religious or medical reasons.

The same arguments could be used for female circumcision (health etc) but is considered mutilation.

Sara,

If I may nitpick, just a little.

It was thought that circumcision would "roughen" or thicken the skin of the exposed glans penis, but it does not.

This was discovered when researchers were attempting to discover why uncircumsized men had such a vastly higher rate of contracting HIV over circumsized men.

As it turns out, the skin thickness of the glans penis (the bulbous tip) is no thicker. It turned out that the thin layer that allowed the penis to slide in the foreskin was the port of entry for the virus.

So if you are planning unprotected sex, you had better be circumsized. You would also be an idiot.

As for female "circumcision", the term is a misleading. The female clitoris is covered by a thin layer of skin called the "hood". When aroused the clitoris becomes erect and projects out from under this hood.

The female hood is equivalent to male foreskin.

The male glans(the head) penis is equivalent to the female clitoris.

A male circumsicion is the removal of foreskin
A female circumsion is quite different, and involves the removal of the clitoris.

So the difference is radical and why the female version is considered mutilation.

I said "nitpick" because if you keep the wang clean and don't have unprotected sex, it really doesn't matter.

I think you have to be optomistic to cut off a bit before you know how long it's going to be

The foreskin is put there by nature so it must have a reason, even if medical science can't decide exactly what that is.

By the way how do you circumcise a whale ?

Never.

A foreskin can be pulled back.

Once cicumcised you can't do the reverse.

Your dickhead stays more sensitive not circumcised.

Very good hygiene can be teached. And is key!!!

I am circumsized, it was done when I was a baby..
I think it is more efficient as far as keeping things clean..
I enjoy the benefits of a less sensitive penis which means it is easier for me to perform for extended periods of time..
And It was done before I knew what it felt like..

I personally am glad it was done, and when it was done.

Also, foreskin does nothing to add to the functional length of your penis, any extra you get because of it is pointless anyway.

hobbes
03-23-2004, 08:12 PM
Hey you kids... "earmuffs"

You people keep saying that "uncircumsized" is more senstive.

Where do you come up with this? Science has shown that both types have exactly the same thickness of skin on the glans.

Have you guys had some sort of before and after experience on this topic?

I do know that there is a LOT of interpersonal difference in the degree of sensitivity of the clitoris. Some women cannot even tolerate the touch of a tongue to the clitoris, they say it "hurts" or is "too intense", some women are not restricted in this way and want you to "take care of business".

I believe your previous , the removal of the clitoris, was a definition of female castration, not circumcision.

Jpol,

You are talking about 2 different subjects.

Castration is the removal of gonads: male=testicles. female=ovary.

The purpose is to remove sexual drive and ability to reporduce.

We do not treat child molestors with the removal of their penis tips (the glans), but with chemical or physical castration.

Female circimcision is not the simple removal of a clitoral hood, but a portion or all of the clitoris itself. So these ladies can still get horny and aroused (because they have ovaries), but many, without a functional clitoris cannot have an orgasm, to relieve this physical desire. A delightful case of permanent "blueballs".

Google it and you will see that " female circumcision" is in no way comparable to the male counterpart. As Sara says, it is mutilation.

The foreskin was designed for the cavemen, and when we became civilized we did not evolve to not need it anymore :)

It's now not needed because we dont' run around in the forest with our penis hanging out.

Personally, I prefer an uncircumcised male. I won't go into details  but there is more to play with!!!! lol.

I particularly feel that such surgery should only be done if there is a medical reason for it.

@Hobbes The desensitisation is brought about through the rubbing of the glans on fabric etc, not necessarily through thickening of the skin. Female circumcision often also includes the removal of outer and inner labia which can be likened to the 'extra' skin of the foreskin.

Choice is the key here methinks...perhaps it should be done once a 'man' (key word) makes the choice and has had the opportunity to give informed consent. A baby is incapable of such choices and therefore should not have it removed because others think it is a good idea. The lack of choice is the area of equivalence in circumcision for both sexes.

It is a cultural/religious practice not a health one.

@7th Likewise we no longer need our appendix (I recommend automatic removal at birth to prevent possible problems later!!!) perhaps we could just chop off all the little bits we don't think we need now we wear clothes!! Hmmm do we need our earlobes, nahhhhh...lets chop em off!!! How about the removal of women's breasts immediately after puberty is done....I mean now that most women don't breastfeed, maybe it would be a good cancer preventative...

they are saying less and less babies are having this done. i wouldn't ave my child circumsized simply because i see no real reason for it. the child is a baby and still feels it even if he doesn't rememeber it. the majority of men on this board saying whats good and bad about a uncircumsized penis are probly circumsized there-fore have no right to speak on it. i see alot of people saying you have to wash an uncircumsized penis, it sounds as though you never wash yours? whether i was cut or uncut i think i would wash my dick either way. i also dont see how this effects how long i last. at least it hasn't yet. if anything it prolongs it if you leave the head covered with a condom on.

Could you tell me the difference between female circumcision and castration. Sorry for being dense, but I don't really understand the medical thing.

Either one seems horrible to me, unless of course there is a medical reason.

You "googled" the wrong term, if you read the post. But again this highlights the pitfall of "google". A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Castrate (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=castration&x=13&y=14)

Circumcize (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=circumcise)

Look at definition #2. The clitoris and the glans (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=glans+penis) penis are sexual homologous embryologically. Both are covered by a layer of skin termed the "prepuce".

In male circumcision, this layer of skin is removed. Kind of like tidying the "naughty bits". Chop off the bulbous tip of your penis and then you have the equivalent of female circumcision.

In female circumsicion, the prepuce is removed as is part or all of the underlying clitoris.

Two completely and radically different surgeries, but given the same name: circumcision.
