When I play games like UT 2004 and Max Payne2 and GTA Vice City ect. my comp lags like hell. When I played UT 2004 today every time I turn my player it is almost like a slide show. Also when I play VIce City every few min a couple sec pause occurs.Keep in mind I play my games at default settings. I also defraged my hdd.

How can I increase performance?

I see you have a P4 CPU. It has a built in throttleback if improperly cooled. Check your temps.

Restart your PC and as soon as it starts press the [del] key to enter the BIOS. There is 'health status' there.

I diden't see a health status but my grafix card is at 45 degreez C

EDIT: does that help?

download a program that checks your temps when your computer is running, although it is not as accurate as the bios ;)

That's 34°C so that's ok.

Your slowdown must be something else.

update ur antivirus scanner and do a search for virus's. If you dont have an antivirus scanner I recomend AVG antivirus. search google and you will find it.

next update ur anti-spyware program and do a search for spyware. If you dont have a spyware program i recomend spysweeper. You can find hte full version on kazaa.

Last go to start>run>type 'msconfig' and press enter>startup tab>disable any programs that you dont need to startup with windows.

good luck.

Maybe you need to reinstall your OS.

atiVidia
03-23-2004, 06:07 PM
ur running a gfFX 5700

see if vsync is on and kill it. it almost always solves these issues.

or you can disable the 8x fsaa u prolly have enabled

i didnt bother reading the whole topic so if any of this was already given then STFU!!!

Christ, it looks like it won't be long before someone suggests re-installing Windows because a printer's out of paper.

Hardcore, if you have checked all of the forum member's suggestions
and you get no increase in speed...I think the solution is probably
close to what TRshady linked to

try this...what resolution are you set for?
High resolution will pull off Ram and slow down your
system, try to change it to a larger one 800x600 as a example
if this works you should look for more ram.

how much left of that 80 gb hardrive do you have left?
windows likes to have some room for swapping files in and
out.
if you are 10 gb open or less , your processing speed will
slow down...the solution is to get rid of some files or add another hardrive.

housekeeping programs like washer , will help with speed also.
let us know if any of our ideas have helped.

TEN GB? Given that WinXP sets the pagefile size at 2.5x the physical RAM, then bumps it if things get close, even if HardcoreGamer has changed this setting or is using an older version of Windows, how many games/applications would need to be running concurrently for a pagefile to struggle with 10GB free space?
I sincerely hope that was a mis-print, although considering where that '0' is on the keyboard, it's unlikely.

turn off ur virus scanner's autoprotect. that speeds up any computer, and especially downloads. and ur vd card is pretty hot. mine idles at 34-36C and at full load, the highest it's ever gone in it's life is 41C. 45 is pretty high

and yea, make sure u ahve good drivers. vice city shouldn't be a prob. it plays perfectly fine on my friends geforce4 mmx 32mb.
