Ok, here's a 2006 update:
Are you tired of Fake Files on Kazaa or elsewhere?
Maybe you just want to download Full Albums?
No worries, there is SoulSeek!
Download and Install
Download Latest Version of Soulseek from HERE (http://files.slsknet.org/slsk156c.exe) and install.
Then choose a Username and Password
Easiest is to use your username that you use
from this forum so others will know who you are. :)

Join the FileSharingTalk.com Room
On the bottom right corner click Rooms so they are in alphabetical order.
The room is called "FileSharingTalk.com".
If the room doesnt show on the list, right-click and Refresh or
you can also right click any room -> click on create room -> then type in "FileSharingTalk.com".
When you get in the room make sure to click Chatroom and seleect "Toggle Room Autojoin".
Share Some Files
1) Now click on File Sharing
2175
2) Then click Add shared folder and choose
Folder is accesable to all or Folder is accesable only to people in my user's list
2176
Repeat to add more folders.
3)Click on your Transfers window and setup the options at the right
2177
4) Now, right-click on everyones name in the room that you recognize from this Forum and go to Add to List.
If you dont know the ppl, ask them.
5) Tell everyone to add you to their list (not everybody is there when you are), different time zones and all that.
You can also PM ppl in SS, right-click on the user name and Send Message.
If you are not added on somebodys list, easiest way is to PM that person and ask nicely,
bad attitude gets you nowhere...
6) Browse everyones files!! Right click on the user name and choose Browse Files,
if you want to dl the whole album, right click on that folder and choose Download.
Go to Traffic window to see how your UL's and DL's are going.
Rules:
1) Music only and preferably Complete Albums.
Do not share your Download Folders, not SoulSeeks nor Kazaas and other apps...
Nobody wants your Incomplite files or albums.
If you want Movies,Software or Games stick with other apps.
SS is not really good for Big Files as you only download the same file from one user.
2) No leechers...at least be sharing 100 songs(Complete Albums) with the rest of the group.
It would be nice if you ripped some of your own CD's ;)
3) When ripping your CDs Rip them at 192 Bitrate or higher for better quality.
Check out the Ripping To Mp3 (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=62018) " Guide To Creating The Highest Quality MP3s On Earth".
4) If you come into the room with a different name then what is used at the forum...
PM somebody that is in the room to let them know you are a member.
5) Only Queue 1 or 2 Albums at a time form a user...give others waiting a chance.
6) Keep your songs organized, its easier to browse and dl when one album is in one folder.
It will looks bad if you have everything in the same folder.
The server goes down from time to time.
You can check SoulSeek Server Status (http://www.remmelt.com/slskboard/status.php) to see if the Server is running.
You can also read SoulSeek FAQ for Dumasses. (http://faq.slsknet.org/index.php?action=artikel&cat=266083&id=40)
Regarding the Rooms. I think there is atleast one room where the guys hangout.
And that room is Invite Only. Ask and maybe someone PM's you.

Pete Waterman

2234 for any client before 152 inclusive.
the new clients allow you to sleect your listening port. also 5534 was made redundant back in the day of 139c

Yeah, most folks know you, but im afraid the new folks, if any,
might feel the need to join the convos as you do.
And then we got idiotic threads, ppl complaining,
and reporting and blah blah blah...
;)
But, it would take just a little effort to try to
get along with the ppl.
Its easier to destroy than create, right?

There's lotsa rooms to check out.
Ppl are not really friendly out there, by default (imo)
is teh internet anyways.
But, it's not impossible to meet great ppl in Soulseek.
It reguires little searching, sharing some files, adding ppl to user list etc.
Sending some PM's, talking with folks of same interest...
There's a little fence to go over, but once you're over it's totally worth the hassle.
That network has seriously music innit. New or Old.
Like always, been nice too ppl is the key.
:D
edit:
Also, I dont know how it is these days but there use to be some issues
with KLBoard and SLSK board, looong ago.
Pretty silly stuff imo.
But I dont think one gains anything good by mentioning Kazaa in Soulseek,
ie. the app or in their forums.
Some ppl just see the red, no matter if its about KMD or Kazaa teh Lite.
So, I wouldnt recommend advertising it.
:D

it's definitely good as long as you have some music already to share. my only problem with it is the prevalence of low bit-rate stuff :(

Hi guys,
I am thinking of trying Soulseek. As I like collecting good rock music from British bands of the 70's etc. I use Ares, good for popular songs.
What do they mean when they say you must have complete albums to share in the Soulseek intro ?
Do they mean every song on an album in a separate file ? or the whole album in one file ?
I prefre the former, but I do like to get every song of an album. I have some good albums to share.
regards
Digby

Soulseek is a good software
The software is knocky imo, but the availability of even pretty obscure music files and full albums is excellent.

Another advocate of soulseek, I've recently switched from DC++ when the private hubs I used ceased to exist! Being able to see the bitrate of the mp3s has to be one of the biggest advantages (over DC++ anyway), couldn't live without it now.
The one problem with it has to be the lack of multiple sources, generally all the best rips (i.e. release group material) tend be well organized by only few users so you end up being in massive queues...so a little patience can be required :/

Do they mean every song on an album in a separate file ? or the whole album in one file ?
Not sure exactly what you mean here but from a religious soulseek user, keeping all the albums tracks in it's own album folder works best.
Example: I have a folder named 'beatles - Abbey Road' and inside is each individual mp3 from that album and nothing more.
The reason for doing it this way is that you can right-click on a file, and it gives you the option of 'downloading the containing folder,' essentially downloading the whole album.
It's a pain in the butt when trying the above mentioned technique for queuing up an album, and then getting a bunch of singles all lumped into a random folder, sometimes thousands!
I hope that cleared it up a little.

Soulseek rules - I've been using it for years now (back to the old AudioGalaxy days) and it's never disappointed me. I've got a 160 gig external HDD just for my music collection, so I've usually got something on the go...
Donating's awesome as well - $5 (about £3) gets you queue jump for a month :D

It's difficult to say why one users machine crashes and another works great, using SoulSeek. Sometimes it helps to get some help, as often your own configuration and other hassles such as firewalls (Zone Alarm) also gaming messengers such as Xfire, all these aspects can cause problems . Sometimes it's routers..On www.portforward.com (http://www.portforward.com) there are great guides for nearly all routers you can imagine...Personal customised help you can find in the FileSharingTalk.com chat channel, on SoulSeek :)

:O It's actually better than your bittorrent crap, ( particularly for music collections from high quality) after all, see if you can find an album out of the sixties, on bitcrap, say Jimi Hendrix...you wont be able to!

What's with your anger towards me? I didn't put down your or talk shit about your(what seems to be) your most favorite, or most used, method of downloading music.. So chill out. And you think Soulseek is better for high quality music? Is that what you're saying? Because typing: "It's actually better than your bittorrent crap, ( particularly for music collections from high quality)", is really what it seems what you were trying to say. I find that hilarious. You obviously must not be a member of some of the private music bittorrent sites. Especially one of the extremely excellent lossless ones.
Now, I may be wrong about this, seeing as I've only been using this program for a couple days(which for the record, I really like a lot), but most of the music searches that I've brought up, the mp3's have been in either 128, 192 or 256 bitrate. Is that what you consider "high quality".
So again, if this isn't what you meant, then I deeply apologize for misunderstanding. But if I understood you correctly, then again...I find that laughable.
after all, see if you can find an album out of the sixties, on bitcrap, say Jimi Hendrix...you wont be able to!
Also, here is another part of your post that I'm having trouble following. Are you saying, that I can't find any albums that was made in the 1960's era...on a private music site? Like...an album from Jimi Hendrix?
Wow, about the whole Jimi Hendrix discog that I downloaded in FLAC format just about two weeks ago on a private "bitcrap"(by the way, very mature there) music site? Or the numerous Velvet Underground albums I have downloaded in either V0 or FLAC format from a private music site. Or a handful of The Yardbirds albums in great quality that I have downloaded from these same sites? Or the entire James Brown discog. Or all of Lee Dorsey's albums. Or a bunch of the Ohio Players albums. Or all the albums by both Funkadelic and Parliament? All these albums were suppose to be exclusive to Soulseek? Because all of the artists I just mentioned, made a lot their albums in the 1960's, and were all found on private music torrent sites. Well...I guess I was just lucky to find all these on "bitcrap".
Would you like me to go on, or have you gotten the point? Seriously, I hope that sentence was just a joke.
*Also there is a difference between a program and a private bittorrent site.Oh...no shit? Because that is definitely news to me. You are a very bright person, and I have learned quite a few things in that one post that you directed towards me. I will definitely watch out for, and take more seriously, all your posts in the future. As I'm sure they all will be as enlightening as this one, and I will greatly be able to benefit from them.
I'm sorry if you took my post the wrong way. I was not trying to make Soulseek sound inferior to private bittorrent. Because honestly, I haven't used the program long enough to make that judgement. But like I mentioned in my first post, I'm quite impressed by this program. So back off. So far I've seen that both "bitcrap" and Soulseek have their own advantages and disadvantages. And I'll be using both for now on.

I was not even aware that users of BitTorrents clients, were capable of articulation, let alone write an understandable reply. Thanks for that.
What I do mean is that more or less any music collection can be found on SoulSeek more or less at any time. Yes the well-known bands will be readily available on different Bittorrent sites. Often discographys...now try to search for music by... say Martin Mcarthy or even a band like "Angel and Airwaves," or any other artist that springs to mind, that's another story altogether. Oink was close to Souilseek qua quality and it was possible to find rare music collections there too. unfortunately we know what happened to Oink.
In any case with the broadband connections of today and the size of modern hard disks, who needs to collect mp3's or flac ... WAV is the way or better still PCM ;)
Feel free to add my nick to your list on SoulSeek, I have added you already.
PS. I do hope I didn't make you Annoyed. :)

Actually, I couldn't find any Martin Mcarthy on the private sites I checked, but I did find a few albums by Angel and Airwaves. But I get the point. And thank you for possibly introducing me to some new music.
Also, if you were serious about adding me to Soulseek, then add me under the name "h8uthemost"(without the quotes). I only use the name Annoyed here. I'll add you under the name you use here.
By the way, I have an actual question about Soulseek. I know this isn't a discussion thread, but I just thought I would ask. The other night I was telling a friend of mine about Soulseek, and how much I'm liking it, and recommended that he too should try it.
Well, he said something about it being too risky. That he didn't want the RIAA coming after him, or something like that.
Now I know that no form of file sharing is risk free, being bittorrent or other programs like Soulseek. But using bittorrent, I was never afraid of getting busted. Usually because the kind of companies that bust the bittorrent sites, probably wouldn't put the time and money into trying to bust all the users of the site. Only site owners.
I also never had any fears while using Limewire a few years ago when I first started downloading music. As you're only downloading from that program. Unlike Soulseek, where you're also uploading.
Just after he told me that, and said he'll stick with the private bittorrent sites, this kind of got me a little paranoid. So how safe do you think Soulseek is?
Thanks for any info.

04-08-2008, 06:22 PM
It's impossible to say. SoulSeek servers are entirely in the hands of the developer. Bittorrent sites particularly private " invite-only" give the idea of security; thats a fallacy and gives a false sense of security. The complete records of Oink landed for example in the hands of the authorities. The records of IPs could easily be traced in time and no doubt monitored. Also the trading of accounts on these private sites are a great risk to their members. For now I feel confident that SoulSeek is safe and provides the users with enough privacy and security. This does mean unfortunately only allowing users one knows, to one's "friends list". Also as you are already aware the IP of the user from whom one downloads, is not visible. All this... not to mention the general high quality and that constantly new users are coming online, who might just have that rare music file one has been searching on other networks for so long, without luck.. :)

Right. Ok, I guess there's always that chance with any type of file sharing. Just whenever I start with any new type of program, especially where you have to upload, these type of questions pop into mind. As I'm sure it does with many others. Guess all we can do is hope for the best.
Well, thank you for the info. You have put my mind at ease. I didn't even think of the IP's not being shown. So that's definitely good. :) And I got you added on my friends list.

I actually haven't had long queue's. I guess I've been lucky. I think the longest I've came across was maybe 20 queue. And that went by pretty quickly.
But then again, I download a lot of older music. So maybe that could be a reason why I've had good luck.

You lot need to upgrade to SoulseekNS.

I didn't get some things.
-One guy there, add me, and I add him, but when I browse him folder list, only shows "waiting for file list".
It could mean that he/she has a lot of files and Soulseek is taking a minute or two to obtain all that info. It could also be that you two aren't pinging very well and Soulseek is having difficulty obtaining the information. That just happens sometimes.
-When I search some musics, there are some in grey, and other in black, why I can only download the black?
Search results appear as black or gray for a reason. The files in gray mean the user who supplied the results has a queue. If the files are black, there's no queue. So basically, you're going to have to wait in line a while for your downloads to start if you're going to download from someone with a queue. You can see the length of the queue by looking under the "In Queue" tab. If the queue is over 200 or so, you'll be waiting a long time, especially if the user has a slow upload speed. If the user has a queue of about 10, 20, etc your downloads should start rather quickly. If you haven't figured it out, the queue is the amount of files a user has waiting to be uploaded. Simple as that.

It's referring to SoulSeek NS ( New Server)
For some reason It was decided to start a new network. So now there is the original SoulSeek network, and the New SoulSeek network running on different servers.
All I can say, is that I have not yet been able to download one single file on the new network and the old network seems to have become even more easy, to download the files I am seeking.. I am still in the old FileSharingTalk.com chat room ...sharing my files.. :yup:
