I'm in a hotel at the moment. They have two wireless routers in the lounge where connecting to the network is free. In the rooms there is a broadband phone socket to connect to but that costs money. My room is i think less than 10 metres from the lounge. However I can only get a signal in one corner of the room and even then, it tells me to pay for the broadband connection. Can they tell if i'm connecting from my room or not?

they should be able to tell that SOMEONE is connecting to the network, but they cant locate you (at least, unless the have the proper (expensive) equipment)

they can easily locate you on the network though

yes, they can know if i'm on, but how do they tell if I'm in my room or ten metres away?

it's not rocket science really.

they have access points installed in each specific location, and they dont need expensive equipment to locate you, simply looking at which access point you are located to they can find you easily.

My suggestion to you is...pay up

I'm connected to the same access point in my room as the one in the lounge, so they shouldsn't be able to tell.
