maybe they are bringing him into this film to set up venom's appearence in spider-man 3 (hopefully!)

Thats very likely.

From what I've heard, the last moments of the sequel focus on John Jameson coming back from a space mission, carring the Venom symbiote, setting up a 3rd movie, which is by the way, confirmed for a 2007 release.
