High Cpu

my cpu has suddenly gone up a lot making programs lock or slow completely down.

i have run ad-aware and found nothing

i have run my avast anti virus and found nothing

i have 56% of my memory free

i have defragmented my memory

I have used regseeker to get rid of bad reg

The only program i can see that is using a lot of cpu (about 15% normally) is my sygate pro firewall.

The computer generally locks up when i open IE.

The only major change I have made recently is move from a 56k modem to a broadband wifi modem.

Edit. Just thought that I am also running Protowall along side sygate. Could the two firewalls slow down IE as they are checking the packets together?

Any suggestions as what to do?

ah , its prob mdu

happens a lot when ppl change from dial up to broadband, its mostly to do with the fact you prob tweeked you dail up connection and the settings are still there for you b/b and its chocking the shit out of it

can be a real pain to get the system to work right again

if it was me , i would back up my files , and format and reinstall windows fresh and start with that new b/b connection , and then tweek it

try a online scan housecall and try spybot s&d
and yes it s not good to have 2 av or 2 firewalls
pick one and uninstall the other one

I would have to agree with muchspl2 on this one, no need to format. Use an on line scaner to check for viruses, and only run one firewall and only on anti virus program. If you run two at the same time (as in two firewalls or two anti viruses programs) they will conflict with each other and slow things down.

I prefere sygate over protowall so do u think using the advanced rules will work the same as using protowall?

Also, if you have a large HOSTS file, it could be the DNS client service (only if it's Windows 2000 or XP).

If that's the case, open a run box, and type: services.msc
You can stop, and place it into manual or disabled startup type.


But, I also heard that protowall and sygate have some problems together, but not like this.

Because some things just can't be fixed.

I find it amusing people recommend spybot or some other spyware program for nearly everything. While spyware programs get rid of a lot of crap, sometimes they have little or no relevance to the problem.

A fresh format will solve that pretty quickly. But of course it sucks if you can't back up your files before it's done. :lol:

@hungrylilboy -- save up some cash a get some more ram. Also ie pretty much screws up no matter what you do. You could try a diffrent browser. Cut down to one firewall. Having two is pointless, although it's not suppose to slow your system down that much.

Windows is notorious for 100% cpu episodes. Depending on the applications your running, who coded them, and how many are actually running at the time. :)

Running Spybot Search & Destroy is the next simplest thing to do. Adaware is a toy in comparison.
