Film buffs like an argument. Anyone who has watched Movieworld for a couple of hours knows this.

Film, as an artform, is open to interpretation and, as a result, criticism.

Does there exist a flawless film? One which shrugs pundits; having acheived, in itself, all of the director's intent?

To start the ball rolling, I'd offer up The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

I think that's pretty much a masterpiece and I can't think of a thing wrong with it.

Too slow.

edit: And what's with the sarky comment, shouldn't people be encouraged to post outside the lounge?

lol you canīt escape it  :frusty:

As for the topic... No. Maybe within one age group.. Maybe. Iīm betting a lot would dislike The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (need to get around to watch that one btw) simply because its age. Also with personality styles which make people prone to different films.

Its like music or other forms of entertainment; you canīt please everyone though you might be able to reach a large audience.

You obviously haven't seen Breakdance II.

My point is how can an, unquestionably, excellent production as the Matrix Trilogy create such a diversity of opinion?

Unarguably, they were groundbreaking films and should be respected for that. Just because the plot is a self-indulgent stream of jibberish it doesn't change the fact that the Matrix has changed cinema forver. It can be argued that the Wac Bros were ripping off styles and splicing genres but they've certainly paved the way for more competent artists.

I disagree.

They paved the way with bullet-time. That is all.
A flawed story-line......a shit leading actor (even fans agree on that one)....and to me, obvious stolen story elements (ever read The Invisibles?)

I offer Star Wars as being universally liked. It gave you a whole universe. There aren't many movies that are set in a galaxy far, far away. They usually are based on Earth of some sort. This movie created something new.

I second that with Frailty.
That movie, unlike The Sixth Sense, keeps you interested all they way through, and has a great ending.

Alot of movies that have good shock endings seem to be considered good movies.
However, some of those movies are not interesting through and through.
The Usual Suspects springs to mind. I liked it...but it wasn't great.

I think a great movie is one you would actually pay money to see again at the theatre.
It has no "dead spots".
It has a kick ass ending.

Yeah, I'd agree that The Matrix ripped off the Invisibles to some degree. And there's an uncanny resemblance between King Mob and Morpheus, don't you think? Its just a shame they didn't rip off more of it imo. They might have made a better trilogy.

Interestingly, Star Wars was recently voted the number one film in Brtiain in a Channel 4 poll. The Godfather was number two.

I must get around to watching Frailty.

Shallow Grave was alright as a debut but its hardly universally embraced.

Trainspotting is an excellent film but watching dead babies crawling upsidedown on the ceiling is not to everyone's taste.

Everyone always says Citizen Cane is one of the best movies ever made. Personally I found it so boring I could barely sit through the entire thing. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. One of my all time favorites is Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I guess anyone who doesn't like action/adventure films might not enjoy that either.

Too slow.

Yes it does get very slow, the whole thing in the desert took along time, and towards the end it takes him about 20 minutes to say "stand up on that grave and put the rope around your neck"

If you can get to grips with the complex story line and over the top gore i think Pulp Fiction is a film not mnay people dislike.

I came out of the lounge because all that was going on was Rappy talking about whats in his toilet and some new guy saying he shares on Kazaa Lite. Ofcourse i come to movieworld for my daily wave and hello to {I}{K}{E} and to advertise my Poll (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=108140)

Wow a real Movieworld :photo:

*goes back to lounge because he feels unwanted here* :cry1:

I think the most liked film would be casablanca.

Films like star wars are liked by many but i have found many people (mostly girls) who said it was boring. I think star wars was on of the best sci fi films ever but there are people who hate sci fi.

I can see why many people think LOTR was too slow and consequently, they didn't like it.

for those who are intrested the internet movie database has a top 250 list.

http://www.imdb.com/top_250_films

these are the most liked film on that site but they may not be "Univerally adored." still, its a good starting point.

edit: i forgot to say that the godfather was great, but it was very violent and vulgar.

also,
Ran (by Akira Kurosawa) might be "Univerally adored"

Personally I don't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Scarface. I've always heard what a great film it was but I never got around to watching it until recently, and its was a good movie but not great.

Start to finish one of the greatest films ever made would have to be Braveheart. Of course this is just my opinion and have a thing for war films but this movie is undoubtedly incredible. A great story and great cast, even the wardrobe and music just made the film one of the best ever.
