This guide will hopefully help those trying to figure out using NewsGroups.
I have provide links to some great guides and information you'll need.
The rest will involve using GrabIt which is a freeware News reader.

First off the best features about Newsgroups is that you will most likely MAX out your speed
on dling and also when you find a file you want there are NO quenes or waiting!!!!
To understand most of the basics read http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Guide To Getting Setup

1. Install GrabIt from http://www.shemes.com/
Current version is 1.6.2 ßeta (build 940)

2. Once youve installed GrabIt you will be asked for your News addy.
You can get this from your ISP (not all ISP support News) or try searching at
http://www.newsbin.com/ISP.htm or http://docs.newzbin.com/Usenet:ISP_Providers

NOTE: If your ISP dosent have Usenet access you will have to get a payserver for access.
If you signup with GigaNews (http://www.giganews.com/?a=fst) you can support
the site at FST by using our refferal link at
http://www.giganews.com/?a=fst

With NewsDemon (http://www.newsdemon.com/?aflid=2273/) you can use PayPal and support
the site at FST by using our refferal link at
http://www.newsdemon.com/?aflid=2273/

3. If you've now inserted the correct addy you should see the Groups available
Simply click on "All groups on Default server"
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/DS.jpeg

If nothing shows then right click on "Default sever" and select "Refresh grouplist"
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/RG.jpeg

You can then go to "Batch" to see if you are dling the list.
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/BH.jpeg

4. Choose your dl folder preference under "Edit", "Preferences", then the "Folders" tab.

5. You will also need to find out how many files at a time your ISP allows to dl, go to "Batch" and click on the article boxes to match how many are allowed by your server. If you dont know how many are allowed once you start a dl add one at a time in sequence until you notice that articles are continually failing at a particular number, then uncheck that box leaving the rest.
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/PL.jpeg

If Your Using NZB Files Your All Set Now!!
Read How To Make NZB Files (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=91764) so you can Contributte.

Guide To Searching Groups

1. Go to "All groups on Default server".
The groups with alt.binaries are the ones you will be looking for.
Type in a word for what you may be interested in, such as "movies" (lower case).
At this point you may wish to sort them by popularity by clicking "Article count".
You should have to click it twice to bring the more popular groups to the top.
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/AT.jpeg
When you see a group you wish to dl from just double click on it.

2. Now go over to "Default server" and expand it.
Find the group you added right click on it and select "Full update"
http://filesharingtalk.com/sigs/FU.jpeg
You can use "Incremental update" later on.
If you wish you can view "Batch" again to make sure it's dling.

3. Once the update is finished, select the group under "Default server" and you're ready to start dling.

Guide To Getting Complete Files

When you dl large files such as movie or image files there will generally be about 50 rars files per 700mb CDR as explained in the Slyck guide, although this varies.

1. When getting ready to dl a release check how many of the rar files are available on the server for the release you are going to dl. As an example a release will have "newmv-grp.r00" through "newmv-grp.r50". I suggest you first dl the PAR/PAR2 (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=87799) file ie. "newmv-grp.PAR" or "newmv-grp.PAR2" (small file around 2k and will be highlighted in blue). Then open the file with SmartPar or QuickPar and it will show you how many rar files there are in the release. You should also dl the nfo file ie. "newmv-grp.nfo" to obtain information on the release.

2. Now go to the first rar in the series ie "newmv-grp.r00" (first rar may also be r01) and check if all the rars are there matching what the PAR file showed. A quick way to do this is to touch the first one with your mouse, then press Shift+Scroll Down until you get to the last. As mentioned in the Slyck guide the last is almost always smaller in size than the rest. You will notice at the bottom left corner you will have text showing ie. "50 files selected out of 2000". If all are there its a good bet to go ahead and dl those rar files as most files on servers are rarely corrupt. You can then extract the rar files.

You can also click the "Find" button and type in the name of the release or the file while checking all 3 boxes before pressing Enter, this will now show only the files with the search phrase you entered on that group. In order to show all the files in that group again simply click on the icon with the "green +" sign.

3. If your short of the 50 files and have only say 48 then you need to see how many PAR/PAR2 files are available ie "newmv-grp01.PAR". Par files are simple to calculate as you need 1 for each missing or corrupted rar file. However PAR2 files replace blocks, usually about 40 blocks equals 1 rar file, although this varies. Once you dl say the 48 rar files along with the 2 PAR files you'll need to complete the release, then open the PAR/PAR2 file with either SmartPar or QuickPar and it should create or repair the missing or damaged files. You should get a message you now have all the rars you'll need for the release.

4. If your still getting an error message and cannot get enough PAR/PAR2 files to repair there is still hope, first try another group for the same release ie. most releases on alt.binaries.movies are also released on alt.binaries.movies.divx or post a request within the group for fills or pars. As a last resort you can also try to get the missing or corrupted rar files on IRC, a good guide on how to do this can be found at How To Get Missing Rars For An Incomplete Archive (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=58238).

Thats it...

Thats a good post REALITY.

Newsgroups are an excellent resource.
I use them all the time.

Just wanted to mention that some idiots do post viruses on the Newsgroups,
so just be wary what you download.

Typical posts are:

"Aquilara caught Nude backstage"
"My Silicon Tittys"

etc.

If the post is out of context with the Newsgroup,
eg "Britney Speares NUDE" in a dvdr newsgroup,
it's highly likely to be a virus.

If you are in adult image Newsgroup, be cautious.
I would advise avoiding such newsgroups.
There are plenty of places on the internet for such material.

I've been a newsbin pro user for almost my entire newsgroup "career". I decided to give GrabIt! a shot last night because I had a particular file I wanted to extract which only needed 9 blocks to be repairable. The way newsbin works is that if you have an incomplete rar of which the first part is missing, none of the rar will be downloaded. However, on GrabIt!, if there's a rar with the first part missing, it'll still be downloaded. Hence, using GrabIt! allowed me to repair the file and extract the film :D

However, I'll still be using Newsbin Pro for my general downloading

Nice gude though Reality :)

You should get between 90 and 95% of your rated connection speed.

I get an average 460-470kbps on my 512kbps connection.

Are you doing the full update? Who is your ISP? What do you mean disconnect? You mean your connection drops or you stop downloading the headers?

Click on refresh again and change to the "Batch" view. See if the download completes or if it stops before the full groulist is downloaded.

I've had this happen before as well, rather strange. I have shut down GrabIt and saved the batch on prompt and then reopend resuming the batch. I have also just left it for a few minutes and it manages to continue loading, never understood why this happened though.

Other suggestion would be to reinstall GabIt making sure to completely delete its folder as long as there is nothing you need or have dl in there, which is unlikely considering...

Great guide REALITY.

I got it all working and am playing with it but....

I use t-online and it seems to suck. No movies and only some music(which isn't my priority). Which of the pay(or even free if there are any good ones) newsgroups do you recommend? Top 5 or so if people have suggestions. I would like to get a variety of old and new stuff including tv shows.

Thanks.

Thanks REALITY. I picked one last night (100 Proof News) and the speeds so far are only half of my capabilities. My isp's maxes me out but they suck.

Interesting system though. I've gotta new toy :D

Well I caved in and got a trial subscription to giganews.

So far, all I can say is WOW. The speeds are fast and it is to 100proofnews what 100proofnews is to my isp's server.

The list for one of the groups I checked was 140mb by itself  The list for the same group on 100 was only about 30mb or so.

Anyway, so far so good.

TD

EDIT:

for a music group, 100 came up with 233 results. Giga came up with 10,770.
for a tv group, 100 came up with 56 results. Giga came up with 2,729.

The exact same groups. Don't bother with 100 proof if your in the market.

EDIT AGAIN  :

I may have been mistaken about 100proofnews. It seems I had some filters on that hid many of the selections. I am trying again.

This is a very interesting and well written guide. After reading it I wanted to try my and at Newsgroup File-Sharing, unfortunately, my ISP does not provide a Newsgroup Server. There's one thing I don't understand though; Why do I need a Newsgroup server? Shouldn't it be the individual Newsgroups problem to worry about a server to host them etc.? Am I expected to pay for a Newsgroup server? Are there any free-access servers out there?

Please clarify...

RealitY

Free Servers are generally slow or don't have acces to binaries which is what you most likely are looking for, so if your ISP dosent have one and you've made sure by asking them directly than you will most likely have to pay for one that is worth using...

heres a small, problem i guess, i've noticed.

when i'm updating a group(s), i get speeds of 80-110Kb/s, which is almost my connection max, which is cool. but when i'm downloading only binaries, i never go above 50KB/s. i can have 3 d/l threads going at one time, and if i have 1 group updating and 2 binaries downloading, my speed automatically jumps to 80KB/s plus, but when that update finishes and starts to download a new binary, the speeds drops back down to usually 46KB/s.

is there something i can do to keep my speeds high no matter what? :(

vivitron 15
07-18-2004, 09:55 PM
you could maybe increase the number of connections you use - though this is most likely to do with the servers at the other end limiting you :)

Some ISP limit their News Group speeds to half of their regular connection speed to supposedly avoid any possible congestion. As for updating groups it is normal to see peek speeds since you are only retrieving the headers for the groups at times even beyond your possible connection speed.

I was considering checking if there was an update while editing links in the guide last night and Ill say this is a great new feature. I have noticed that dling from the GrabIt Search window is a bit different, I have to select the files I want either singly or with shift plus scroll and then right click on them and select the server as in Default Server, seems double clicking or using the Grab button at the top does not start the dl from this window although still a great feature and a big time saver as well. It would also be nice if the colum width was user set and did not reset on every seach...

I have NTL and the newsgroup is news.ntlworld.com.

I have forwarded the port in my router and the speeds are ace. All 8 slots are available and the speeds are as near to max as makes no difference, I have a 1500kB connection. I noticed that I could use more of my bandwidth when I opened all the available slots, make sure you have done this as well as forwarding the relevant port.

I have just downloaded circa 250 Mb in a 37 mins.

Cheers for the guide.

Iv got the same Net connection as you. NTL has good retention wit about 6-7 days but the groups it has they do no contain all the headers that a pay server (giganews) does. And NTL is lacking some Console and DVDR groups. I manage to get a 700mb file in 1 hour 3 mins aprox and can do about 16gb a day on newsgroups.

See if you can find your ISP in this list (http://docs.newzbin.com/Usenet:ISP_Providers).

Sorry, but as announced we have found it necessary to limit the number of users online at the same time for awhile,
for now we've set this to 800, so seeing this page means we are currently at that limit.
We've had numerous emails already with people thinking they can permanently no longer access, or they need another new account... you don't, as soon as the 'users online' number drops you will get back in.

Contributors to the site, regular posters and those with access to the Indexing beta should be auto excluded from this,
but if you see this page and you are one of these, please contact admins(at)nzbzone.com with your user name and we will check.

If you previously logged out/cleared your cookies and you think you should be able to bypass the user limit, please try to log in on the right, if you are not eligible to bypass it will send you back here, if so, please just wait a little while

I try using NZB for "Interpol - Evil" and grabit doesn't work. MY DL speed displays an outrageously high number and nothing is downloaded. This happens with every other NZB i've tried to use so far as well.

I use the search function instead, and i see what i need, but when i grab the file, it says "article not found". Bull shit! I just clicked on the fucking thing! How could it not exist?

PS: People can get into the nzbzone site without registering, just go to bugmenot.com

The search function in GrabIt is based on its own server which if I recall has a 30 day retention so it will show all articles available in the last 30 days. This has nothing to do with the actual server your using as most ISP only have a 3 to 5 day retention.

I would suggest making a search and then sorting by date and then try to grab a recent article and see what happens. If you still get not found then its possible your ISP dosent even support binaries which means you cant get them at all or they dont have the group your trying to access available.

The fact is ISP service is touchy and even those that have decent access have low retention although you just have to test out a series of different things to find out. Ultimatly though a server like NewsHosting which we have a referral banner up above is the the best way to go...

SodiumChloride

For user name and password, are you using your own ISP user name / password?

For example, if your account name (to log on) is nikola456 and password is 12fd136svh then input those. If your unique user name and password don't work, ring your ISP and ask them what you need to access newsgroups. They may have a seperate account for those wishing to use them.

The server your using docesent have enough retention to get the files your trying to grab so theyre not there anymore. If your using your ISP service then its most likely that they have low retention. Make sure your not grabbing something that is to old for your service. If you still have this issue with files that are recent then you may have to look into a payserver to access Usenet service. The best deal around is NewsHosting which we are an affiliate for here at FST and you can support the site by signing up through our banners above. You can also use our referral link at...

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out the NG's for a while now, glad to have found this forum and this thread. Been using torrents for a long time but have heard the NG route is a better way to go.

I have a question about Grabit which I have DL'd and installed.

In OE there appear to be 8766 entries in the group alt.binaries.multimedia.sitcoms however in Grabit there appear to be only 493.

Is there a way to get all 8766 entries to show up in Grabit? I have looked through the preferences but seem to find anywhere to set the number of post it gets.

Cheers!

Nice guide. I now understand what NZB files are and how to make use of them. Sadly, after installing Grabit, I've now discovered my ISP does not have alt.binaries.warez on their list, which is the one the NZB file I opened wanted to go to. Various other binary and warez lists where in there but not that one. Oh well. Back to bittorrent and P2P for me...

Hi there!

Yesterday I freshly installed GrabIt and used it to download 2 NZBs from the forum. The odd thing is that, instead of downloading the attachments in the news posts, the proggy downloaded something into the Cache folder instead of the files.

Previously I had the program installed and it worked differently.

Everything seems to have been downloaded, so I just need to know how to convert this to the files and how to avoid this. I want the program to download the files, like I had before.

The zip file contains only the nzb file; it's compressed and therefore is a faster download option for people on slow connections.
Download the nzb to anywhere then just open with Grabit.

NOTE: If your ISP dosent have Usenet access you will have to get a payserver for access.
:D :D[/quote]

Hi

does it mean that my ISP - Chelo could have access to Usenet and I could then use it for free?

Nice quide. I'm using news.verizon.net and speeds aren't bad. Speeds vary between 1200 KB/s and 1850 KB/s and I get 32 connections :yup:

Rapidshare sucks compared to usenet , usenet is proper releases ; not something some kid ripped and uploaded

i'm a very recent convert fron bt and am still learnig the ropes on usenet. i've been using grabit for a couple of weeks with great results. my dl speed was around 1,6 mbs but for the last few days it starts out that fast but after around 2 min. it drops down to 300 kbs. if i break the connection and restart it happens the same again. whats the deal? is it my isp or ????? ive tried different ports encypt/non its always the same now. should i try a different client? any help would be great.

Great guide, unfortunately my ISP doesn't support Newsgroups but i used to have a few usenet server usernames and passwords that worked in grabit for 6 or so months.
It would be nice if i could find a few more! ;);)
