View Full Version : Stupid Place Names

While in the youth hostel at Rowardennan recently on a hill-walking trip, I came across a tourist brochure and decided to have a look. A little place near the north shore of Scotland caught my eye and caused me to snigger regularly for approximately 3 days afterwards.

This attraction, the largest coastal cave in Britain, is called "Smoo Cave". It's even got a website (http://www.smoocave.org/).

Post your own local (or non-local if you prefer) stupid placenames, and link 'em if you can.

For the record, the longest place name in Britain is not the oft-quoted Llanfairpwllgwyng˙llgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoch but is actually another Welsh village, Gorsafawddacha'idraigddanheddogleddollonpenrhynareurdraethceredigion. I have a photo somewhere of me standing next to the sign at the train station (obviously taken from a distance  ).

There's a village called "Reet" - Dutch for "Arse".

"Okselaar (http://www.scherpenheuvel-zichem-info.be/Zichem/Okselaar.htm)" actually means "the hair in one's armpit".

And then there's http://www.ulrp.com/photos/graphics/austria2.jpg

I don't know, I think all places in Scotland sre not pronounced the way they should be pronounced. That provided ample entertainment on the Pub Crawl where they all made me read things out loud they knew I wouldn't get right. Usually followed by Lamsey screaming 'OWNED!!!' <_<
