ok, once again i am back with partitioning probs :(

trying to move my C: drive up to the first spot
current layout is this:
1st = D:
2nd = C: (OS)
3rd = E:
4th = F:

windows is on my C: drive
the D: drive was in the first position because Compaq ships with a recovery drive
i have deleted it, and want to move windows (C:) to the first partition,
shrink it, and expand my D: drive

i thought i had fkd up the first time i tried this because i didnt modify my boot.ini
and it fkd everything all to hell
this time i did modify my boot.ini to tell the fkr to read from the first partition,
and it still fkd everything all to hell
some file (something hal.dll or some shit like that) corrupted during the move

used Partition Magic 8 the first time, Acronis this time,
so i am guessing its not the software, it has to be something i missed :unsure:

i have recovered everything, and am up and running again,
but i really would like to reconfigure this fkr....

any suggestions?

I've had trouble with Partition Magic several times.... except when I used the boot disks. But, if you had trouble with Acronis, too, then it's most likely something else.

Hal.dll (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm) - Referring to it being missing during XP installation, but may still help.

When in doubt, Google is thy friend (http://www.google.com/search?q=hal.dll)

But, if I were in that situation, I would just wipe out everything, and start over. I always like a fresh start, but that's just me.
If ya got backups, do what ya gotta do. If all else fails, just go the easiest route, if ya know what I mean.

well since it seems eveything points to the boot.ini....
heres my current boot.ini, with windows on the second partition...

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

and here is what i changed it to....

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

now, unless i did a typo, then that should have done it, right?
(with windows moving up to the first partition on the disc)

Seems fine to me.
But, JUST IN CASE. If you can't boot, then check these out.
The Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) has EditBINI (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html) which will allow you to edit the boot.ini file without the operating system.

I've lost count of how much time i've spent giving people advice on partitioning. I just cant be bothered to start again :ph34r:

If you can look up my previous posts (months old) and you may find something useful.
