I know it's been done before but not in the new Sportsworld.

So, who's your favourite sportsperson? Any sport, dead or alive.

I'm gonna say Michael Schumacher with Ayrton Senna very close behind.

Ah but one choses the best in one's favourite sport. Then nominates them as the greatest sportsman, at least that is the temptation.

I for one think it is so much more complex. Who is the most gifted, who was about the longest, who was the most successful, did they dominate during a period of other greats. Did they play a game of a sport, was their equipment (ooer missus) better than other people's and did that make them dominant. Were they the most popular with the fans, or the least popular but succeeded anyway.

Why not have a wee competition / poll - nominations for the greatest sportsman then the mods choose a short list for a Poll. Can I put forward a few suggestions, in no particular order.

Pele
Jack Nicklaus
Mohammed Ali
Phil Taylor
Michael Jordan
Wayne Gretzky
Stephen Hendry
Brian Lara
Lance Armstrong
Fangio
Sir Steven Redgrave
Jesse Owens

Apologies for wrong names or bad spelling.

There are so many greats, who transcend their sport. It would be nice to see who the chaps here think is the greatest.
